Sam Burns leads the US Open - Scott in the hunt for the title!
Things are heating up in Oakmont, Pennsylvania! Sam Burns, the 28-year-old golf star, remains at the top of the field after the third round of the US Open. With a solid round of 69, one shot under par, he established himself at -4 overall. In addition to three birdies, he also recorded two bogeys. Burns, currently ranked 22nd in the world and having won five PGA Tour titles, is looking for his first major victory. Last week he tied for second at the Canadian Open, losing in a playoff to Ryan Fox. In his current form, he seems ready to take on the challenge, as La Presse reports.
But the competition never sleeps. J. J. Spaun, 34 years old and ranked 25th in the world, is hot on Burns' heels. With a total of -3, he is just one shot behind and is extremely optimistic as he says he is playing the best golf of his career. Another face to keep an eye on is Adam Scott. The experienced Australian, who won the Masters in 2013, closed his round with an impressive 67, the best of the day, which also puts him at -3. Scott will play in the final round alongside Burns in the last duo and, if he continues to play like this, could become the second oldest winner of this tournament - at 44 years old.
Who else is in the running?
Viktor Hovland is currently in fourth place, three shots behind. The Norwegian has done well and could also shake up the field as the eagerly awaited final round approaches. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler moved to +4 with a round of 70 strokes and now finds himself in 11th place, eight strokes behind Burns. It will be a challenge for Scheffler to catch up in the coming rounds, while Rory McIlroy is in 49th place at +10 and has described his performance as “very average”. McIlroy, struggling with motivation after his Masters win, made three bogeys in the final five holes and urged patience on the tricky Oakmont course.
The performance of Nick Taylor, the best Canadian in the tournament, will also be exciting. He has the same score as Scheffler and was stable in the first rounds with 73, 71 and 70.
