Attention Salzgitter! High UV radiation: How to protect yourself properly!

On July 2nd, 2025, the weather in Salzgitter will be at its best - the sun is shining and temperatures will climb up to 36°C. But while the summer temperatures lure many people outdoors, the... German Weather Service urgently draw attention to the dangers of high levels of UV radiation. An official UV index warning is in effect between 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., raising the value to 4. This corresponds to a medium risk, so protective measures are strongly recommended.

For anyone who likes to spend time outdoors, there are a few simple rules to follow. Long stays in the sun should be avoided between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. It is recommended to wear a sunproof shirt and long pants and to apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 30. There is also the essential protection in the form of sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat.

Health risks and protective measures

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation can have serious health consequences. These include not only unpleasant sunburn, but also long-term consequences such as premature skin aging and an increased risk of skin cancer, especially malignant melanoma. Over the past 40 years, the number of new malignant melanomas has doubled every 10 years. It is therefore crucial to take the DWD’s warnings seriously.

The UV index calculations are based on various data models, including the ICON weather forecast system with 13 km pixel pitch and the COSMO-EU with 7 km pixel pitch. These systems allow a precise and up-to-date assessment of the risks posed by UV radiation. Fortunately, most people are already aware of the risks and are implementing the recommended protective measures.
