Drug alarm in Salzgitter-Bad: Police intervene!

There's a lot going on in Salzgitter-Bad on June 28, 2025, as the police reports show. A look at recent events reveals that drugs and road safety remain major issues.

Yesterday, June 27th, a traffic accident occurred on the K 22 between Steinlah and Gebhardshagen, in which a 39-year-old woman and her two children (7 and 5 years old) were slightly injured. The family's vehicle skidded, overturned and ended up in a ditch. An oncoming car caused this unfortunate incident. The total damage amounts to around 30,000 euros. The injured people were immediately taken to the hospital as they complained of chest pain.

Drugs in focus

Another facet of the situation in Salzgitter-Bad concerns drug offenses. On June 16, 2025, two drug offenses were reported over the weekend. An 18-year-old e-scooter driver was stopped on Erikastrasse and admitted to consuming THC. The police ordered a blood sample. Once again it turned out that the e-scooter had no insurance cover, which also led to criminal proceedings for violating the compulsory insurance law.

Only a short time later, on Burgundenstrasse, another man was checked. In his shoulder bag, officers found a white substance believed to be heroin, as well as medical paraphernalia, including syringes and needles. These utensils had previously been stolen from the Braunschweig Municipal Clinic. For this purpose, an investigation was initiated into violations of the Narcotics Act and theft. The situation makes it clear that drugs such as cannabis and their derivatives are often linked to unauthorized driving, which should not be underestimated.

The role of cannabis in traffic

Cannabis, especially the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) it contains, changes perception and can severely impair the ability to drive. The change to the Road Traffic Act as part of the Consumer Cannabis Act, which came into force on April 1, 2024, has shaped the regulations particularly for public road traffic. Although new regulations apply, it was unclear for a long time how exactly THC would be taken into account in traffic controls, as until recently there was no set limit like there was for alcohol (0.5 per mille). A detection of just 1 ng/ml THC in the blood is now considered sufficient for a violation of Section 24a (2) StVG.

Today, June 28th, a 27-year-old man was caught driving an e-scooter under the influence of alcohol. An alcohol test showed 0.84 per mille. He reacted aggressively to the police officers, who then had to use gas to subdue him. He will also be charged with traffic offenses because he was prohibited from continuing his journey.

The police warn urgently about the dangers of drugs and alcohol behind the wheel. In Salzgitter-Bad, efforts to make road traffic safer remain essential and it remains to be seen how the situation will develop in the future.
