New Stoppelmarkt sticker: Celebrate Bokern's 75 years of tradition!
On June 12, 2025, the showmen's community gathered in Vechta to present the 30th edition of the popular Stoppelmarkt sticker with a very special motif. The sticker shows the snack bar of the traditional Bokern family, which has been present at the Stoppelmarkt for a proud 75 years and is now in its third generation. At the presentation in the town hall, Mayor Kristian Kater acknowledged the commitment of Heinz Bokern and his family and congratulated them on this impressive anniversary.
The story of the Bokern family at Stoppelmarkt begins in 1950, when Heinz Bokern's father opened the first stand. Today Heinz Bokern has been behind the sales counter for 55 years and is also a founding member of the Vechta Traveling Showman Association. The sticker, which is being released in an edition of 3,000 copies, costs five euros and is available in various sales outlets in Vechta, including the Hammer specialist market, several restaurants and the Böckmann textile store.
The Stoppelmarkt – An anniversary full of tradition
The Stoppelmarkt is known as one of the largest folk festivals in northwest Germany and attracts around 800,000 visitors every year. Its roots go back to 1298, when it was first mentioned. Interestingly, in 1577, due to the plague, the market was moved to an open field outside the city walls, the ground of which had the stubble left over from the previous harvest - this gave it its name. Today the market area covers an impressive 160,000 square meters and attracts over 500 showmen and numerous attractions.
What highlights are coming up this year? On Thursday, August 15, 2024, the parade begins at 4:30 p.m. and will be opened by the mayor at 6:30 p.m. On the following Friday there will be a “Happy Hour” from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. there will be a church service in the Lower Saxony Tent. Family-friendly offers are on the program on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, when Family Day attracts visitors with reduced prices.
The journey to the Stoppelmarkt
There are numerous travel options for everyone who would like to visit the Cologne folk festival. There are enough parking spaces - around 30,000 are available. Bus trips from the Oldenburger Münsterland are also available, and the NordWestBahn takes guests from the Bremen/Oldenburg and Osnabrück areas directly to the market area.
Folk festivals like the Stoppelmarkt are not only a place of fun, but also a meeting place for generations and an important part of regional identity. As with other traditional events in Germany, of which there are around 9,750, they are often characterized by regional customs and festive attractions. It is estimated that they attract up to 190 million visitors every year. The anticipation for the Stoppelmarkt, which will be ceremoniously opened this year on August 15, 2024, is growing ever greater.
For everyone who is looking forward to the Stoppelmarkt, there is no reason to rush - preparations are already in full swing to properly celebrate this anniversary. The local showmen's association shows that traditional values and modern festival fun are not lost even in the digital age.
