Fürstenwalde: Train station becomes a no-go zone – citizens in fear!

In Fürstenwalde, Brandenburg, a growing security problem is affecting citizens, especially in the train station area. Here, residents report a significant increase in attacks, aggressiveness and littering. The situation has become so serious that the station area has become a no-go zone for many at night World reported.

An example of the tense situation is the brutal attack on an 18-year-old German on August 2, 2025. Two young men, 17 and 18 years old, attacked the victim with punches and kicks. Fortunately, the young man was able to free himself and alert the police. While the 18-year-old has not yet appeared before the police, the 17-year-old already has a history with the police. Both are now under investigation for common assault Märkische Allgemeine Zeitung reported.

Sense of security and crime statistics

Crime in Fürstenwalde is a hot topic. The police registered 28 robberies at the train station alone in 2023 and even had to record 20 more cases in 2024. Bodily injuries increased from 329 to 375, while property damage decreased. Mayor Matthias Rudolph speaks of a “perceived insecurity” that is difficult to quantify. Many citizens, such as the taxi driver and other residents, report fears and negative changes since 2015, when the refugee crisis brought many migrants to the city.

Citizens like Chris Gretzschel report an “open gang war” between groups from different countries of origin. These developments are eroding the public's sense of security and instilling fear in people. Police had to increase operations at the station from 197 in 2023 to 256 in 2024 to address this worrying situation.

Public perception and measures

The vision for Fürstenwalde is to be improved through construction projects and urban development changes. The city is planning a new quarter on Eisenbahnstrasse as well as renovations to the train station, which are scheduled to begin at the end of 2026. Mayor Rudolph is also considering video surveillance. But as he notes, there is a lack of staff to effectively implement these plans.

Christian Kromberg, chairman of the German Forum for Urban Security, emphasizes that the feeling of insecurity in public spaces is not only determined by numbers. There are also personal perceptions and experiences that influence the feeling of security. Future measures must therefore not only be based on numbers, but also respond to citizens' feelings in order to alleviate growing fears and regain confidence in security.
