Two traffic accidents in Verden: Injured people and significant property damage!
On Friday, two traffic accidents in Riede and Thedinghausen caused excitement and injured people. The Verden/Osterholz police station reported the incidents that took place in the morning and evening of the same day.
The first accident occurred around 8:15 a.m. on the 'Querdamm' street in Riede. Three vehicles collided here when an 18-year-old tractor driver was overtaken by two car drivers while turning. In this context, a 24-year-old woman from Thedinghausen and a 25-year-old man from Hilgermissen sustained minor injuries. The material damage amounts to around 14,000 euros, which seems minor considering the circumstances.
Serious accident in Thedinghausen
In the evening, around 7:26 p.m., the situation became more dramatic. A 30-year-old motorcyclist suffered serious injuries in an accident on Syker Strasse in Thedinghausen. A 51-year-old from Bremen overlooked the motorcyclist with his truck, which led to the serious collision. The injured man was immediately transported to hospital, where he now requires treatment.
Such incidents are not isolated cases. In the whole of 2024, Germany recorded around 2.5 million road traffic accidents. A decrease compared to previous years, but the number of accidents resulting in personal injury remains worrying. The number of road deaths has fallen since 1970 to 2,770 in 2024, thanks to road safety measures, but the EU transport ministers' Vision Zero target of zero road deaths by 2050 remains a major challenge.
Causes and statistics
The most common causes of such accidents are insufficient distance, improper speeds and driving under the influence of alcohol. In 2024, one in five alcohol-related accidents resulted in personal injury. The increasing number of accidents involving e-bikes is also particularly alarming, with 26,057 riders injured or killed in the same year. This shows that not only drivers but also cyclists are often involved in accidents and we are all required to rethink our behavior on the road.
Road traffic accident statistics are constantly updated and are an important tool for legislation, traffic education and road construction. It shows the structures and factors that lead to accidents and thus supports the improvement of road safety. Therefore, measures to promote infrastructure and raise awareness among road users are essential.
All of these figures and statistics make it clear: Even though we have made progress in road safety, caution and consideration are still required on the roads. The domestic accidents in Riede and Thedinghausen are a sad example of the fact that it is still important to be vigilant.
