Kidnapped cat Aramis: finally home after a turbulent return!

Beautiful stories from the animal world often cause excitement and bring unforgettable moments. There have been some remarkable animal experiences in Germany recently that have caused both joy and concern.

A particularly emotional chapter occurred on Norderney, where Aramis, a nine-year-old Bombay cat, was mistakenly identified as a stray by holidaymakers. They took him with them to North Rhine-Westphalia and initially didn't want to give him back. But thanks to an implanted chip, the legitimate family, the Majerts, were informed. After a tense return that required police involvement, Aramis was finally returned to his family in January 2025. Catharina Majert expressed relief at the happy turn of events, while the holidaymakers tried to set conditions for the return. Aramis was originally handed over to the Wolfenbüttel animal shelter as a found animal, which made his return all the more significant. This story impressively shows how important animal protection is, which is anchored in the Basic Law and is considered a state goal BMEL reported.

Hearts at Hanover Zoo

Meanwhile, at Hanover Zoo, a Bentheimer land pig named Wilma is attracting everyone's attention. With a heart-shaped spot on her right side, the lively pig causes a lot of attention. The keepers lovingly named her “Little Heart” and she has been happy to live in Meyer’s courtyard at the zoo since 2025. Stories like these about special animals show how much joy and wonder animals bring into our lives.

Animal incidents

But not everything was a celebration: a rooster named Hermann alerted the police in East Frisia. He drew attention to himself at a rest area next to the A28, but could not be caught. Finally, animal rescuers managed to capture Hermann and take him to a sanctuary. This story reminds us that our fellow animals sometimes get into trouble and need help.

In another incident, a young man reported what he thought was a crocodile in a rainwater retention basin in Vechta. However, after extensive investigations and the use of drones, it turned out that the video was not taken in Vechta, which brought relief. Such misunderstandings can easily keep the authorities on their toes.

A stork with offspring

The most animalistic middle of the year brought another highlight: the stork Fridolin and his partner Mai had offspring. However, the young storks were injured when they were attacked by another white stork. Fortunately, one of the young storks was treated and the family was reunited in July. Nabu keeps the public informed through regular reporting on Fridolin, with a nest that can be observed via live webcam.

These stories underline how important the topics of animal protection and species-appropriate husbandry are, and how diverse the experiences in our environment are. Animal protection is a constantly vigilant issue, which is supported by legal regulations such as the animal husbandry labeling law, which has been in force since August 2023. It has been shown again and again that people care about improving both animal welfare conditions and the welfare of animals BMEL and numerous initiatives that strive to protect animals clearly demonstrate this.
