On October 28, 2025, a large container ship, the “Wilhelmshaven Express”, was ceremoniously christened in the Jade-Weser-Port in Wilhelmshaven. With an impressive length of around 400 meters, this ship has space for an impressive 23,660 standard containers. It belongs to the renowned Hamburg class, a series of large container ships built by Hapag-Lloyd in South Korea. This is a clear step to underline the important role of the Jade Weser Port in international trade, especially within the framework of the cooperation between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd.
Hapag-Lloyd, which has been active at the container terminal in Wilhelmshaven since 2022, sees the port as one of the main transshipment points for its “Gemini Cooperation”. This collaboration is a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening ties between Asia and Europe. The port is seen as a reliable hub, while Hapag-Lloyd plans to increase container throughput per hour to further increase efficiency.
Economic importance of the Jade Weser Port
The Jade-Weser-Port recently reached the impressive mark of one million standard containers (TEU) handled. This number is not only cause for celebration, but also represents a milestone for the port. For 2025, the port is aiming for a throughput volume of between 1.3 and 1.5 million TEU, and with an annual capacity of up to 4.3 million TEU, there is plenty of room for growth. Hapag-Lloyd is confident that the increasing number of XXL freighter calls will further boost container throughput.
“Negotiations with container shipping companies about new lines are already underway,” said a spokesman for Hapag-Lloyd. This shows that the port will continue to play a central role in container traffic in the future. There's really something to do!
