Rail chaos near Oldenburg: Hunte Bridge causes massive delays!

Oldenburg – Today there is bad news in Oldenburg and the surrounding area for all commuters and travelers who rely on rail transport. As the World reported that a disruption at the Hunte Bridge, which now has an impressive service life of around 70 years, led to significant delays and cancellations in rail traffic. For the next three to four weeks, the bridge will only be single-track and can be used at a maximum speed of 20 km/h. Over 100 trains pass through this important artery every day, which now causes a lot of inconvenience.

The regional S-Bahn connections RS3 and RS30, which run from Bremen via Oldenburg to Wilhelmshaven and Bad Zwischenahn, are particularly affected. The regional express RE 18, which travels from Osnabrück to Wilhelmshaven, is also struggling with the restrictions. Another setback: long-distance trains between Bremen and Norddeich currently have to prepare for an increase in travel times by around ten minutes.

Negative impact on shipping

The problems at the Hunte Bridge not only affect rail traffic, but also shipping traffic. Ships can now only pass through the area in two directions, which results in additional delays. Fortunately, the sidewalk along the bridge is not affected and remains available.

The reason for the restrictions is a crack in the support part of a counterweight that was discovered during repair work. Experts keep an eye on the wear and tear on the structure and carry out daily inspections. Travelers are urged to inform themselves about changes and possible delays before traveling.

Comparison with other bridge damages

Interestingly, this is not the Hunte Bridge near Elsfleth, which is also in the headlines. This bridge had to put a temporary bridge into operation due to an accident with an inland waterway vessel. According to current reports, the planned new construction of this bridge should be completed by the end of 2027 or beginning of 2028.

The situation at the Hunte Bridge shows how important it is to invest in infrastructure and carry out regular maintenance to prevent such unexpected disruptions. Commuters can only hope that the situation will soon ease again and the traffic flow in the region will remain stable.
