WHV women: Test match defeat against VfL Oldenburg – coach happy!
Yesterday, the handball players from Wilhelmshavener HV played an insightful test match against the Bundesliga A youth team from VfL Oldenburg. With a final score of 33:38 (16:20), the WHV women performed respectably despite the defeat and were able to gain important insights. This duel took place as part of the final training camp in Wilhelmshaven, where the players prepared intensively for the coming season.
Coach Christian Schmalz was quite satisfied with his team's performance. How NWZonline reported, Schmalz emphasized that the team worked well and was able to try out a lot. In the final phase of the game, the WHV women had to make some strategic adjustments. So circle runner Swantje Timmermann was ordered forward, which enabled exciting attacks, but also led to gaps in the defense, which VfL Oldenburg exploited coldly.
Preparation for the coming season
The WHV squad had to do without the players Katharina Schanko and Pia Mertens in this test match, which increased the challenges for the team. Schmalz noted that more would have been possible in the first half, as the team conceded a few fast-paced counterattacks that contributed significantly to the final result. Further test games against BV Garrel and Eintracht Ihlow are planned for the next few weeks, which will give the girls the chance to further refine their style of play.
Another highlight is on the program on Tuesday, August 26th, when the WHV will play against Hude/Falkenburg in their own hall. The official season opener will take place on Saturday, September 6th, against TV Hannover-Badenstedt II, at 2:30 p.m. in the Nordfrost Arena. The anticipation for the new season is already noticeable!
With a lot of commitment and a clear view of opportunities for improvement, the Wilhelmshavener HV appears to be well prepared to build on last year's successes in the coming season. It is important to quickly close the gaps that have arisen and strengthen team spirit, because only then can the WHV women really shine. Spectators can already look forward to exciting games!
