But how did this come about? In the past, the different working time models at VW ranged from 25 to 35 hours per week. With the new regulation there is finally clarity for all full-time employees. The adjustments to the VW shell contract ensure that not only working hours, but also job security have a future - operational dismissals are excluded until the end of 2030. This gives employees a bit of security in uncertain times.

A question of flexibility

The labor law framework is not only important at VW. In general, working time regulations are part of the general collective agreement and are subject to certain legal principles, which generally stipulate a working day of 8 hours and a maximum weekly working time of 48 hours. From January 1, 2031, collective wages and training allowances will be increased by 5.5%. Until then, however, the monetary aspect remains somewhat limited: the rate of tariff increases will be slowed in 2025 and 2026. Volkswagen is using these temporary measures to implement socially acceptable workforce reductions.
