Wolfsburg's new visitor highlight: comfortable factory tour in the ID.3!
Wolfsburg is not just a place for car manufacturing, but a mecca for automobile enthusiasts from all over the world. Since 1948, the Volkswagen factory has been attracting visitors who want to experience the fascination behind vehicle production up close. Over eight million guests have enjoyed the factory tour so far and the gates welcome up to 1,000 visitors every day. This October the visitor experience was taken to a new level.
On October 9, 2023, new visitor trailers were presented for the factory tour, which ensure more comfort and safety. These stylish trailers, which are towed by a fully electric ID.3, offer 30 seats and the total train length is around 18 meters. A team weighs around six tons. The “Guest Relations” team consists of 40 employees who take care of the concerns and wishes of the guests - on a tour that stretches around seven kilometers through central production areas.
New generation of vehicles with accessibility
What makes these new trailers so special? They have automatic doors, entry aids and seat belts in all seats - everything for a safe and pleasant experience. The introduction of two barrier-free trailers with automatic wheelchair platforms, which also enable people with disabilities access to technology and vehicle production, is particularly positive. From now on, children aged six and over are also allowed to take part in the factory tours, which will expand and enrich the offerings for families.
The tours are not rigid, but flexible: they adapt to both the wishes of groups and the production processes in the factory. Stops at the most prominent points of production, such as the “wedding area”, where the body, engine and chassis are assembled, or in the impressive areas of the press shop and paint shop, are particularly popular.
A piece of automotive history
And what would a look at VW be without a nostalgic look back? The factory tour has evolved enormously over the years. Initially it took place on foot, before vehicles were used from the end of the 1990s - from 2000 onwards there were even specially designed panoramic railways. The idea for the new trailers came about during the Corona period in 2020, and the first trips were made as a test on October 9, 2023. The football professionals from VfL Wolfsburg were also there and gave the event a special kick.
In summary, Volkswagen has not only invested in the future with the new trailers, but also preserved the special charm of automotive history. Anyone who has ever been to Wolfsburg knows that there is something going on there and time flies when you can take a look behind the scenes of this global giant. In the future, every visit will not only be a journey into the world of automobiles, but also a comfortable and safe experience for all visitors.
