Eintracht Braunschweig signs Heiner Backhaus: A new beginning!
Eintracht Braunschweig has hired a committed new head coach: Heiner Backhaus, who previously worked at Alemannia Aachen. The 43-year-old, who made the move on June 17, 2025, signed a two-year contract with the Lions. The transfer fee for the former professional footballer is just under 100,000 euros. This means that Backhaus will be in charge of the club's fortunes in the second division next season, while the Aachen fans will say goodbye to him with a feeling of disappointment. His departure was met with strong reactions, with frustration expressed across the internet. But Backhaus left no doubt that he did not leave the club without prior discussions and that he did not want to wash “dirty laundry,” as he himself remarked. Thanks to the positive experiences he was able to gain in Aachen, he said he left with a good feeling.
But why the change? Backhaus explained that internal problems and the attractive opportunity to work with Eintracht Braunschweig in the second division were the main reasons for his move. He already achieved success in Aachen and led the team from the Regionalliga West to the 3rd league, where he secured relegation last season. He therefore remains present as a coach in the higher leagues, which is also important for his future career plans.
Coaching team and change of atmosphere
Backhaus brings a breath of fresh air into the Eintracht Braunschweig coaching team. Benjamin Kessel, the club's sports director, is convinced of Backhaus' footballing orientation and attitude. Together with Marc Pfitzner, who previously worked as interim coach and remains assistant coach, he will prepare the team for the coming season. Both coaches also met during training for the DFB Pro license, which promises harmonious work in the new constellation. Pfitzner was crucial during the relegation games and the full composition of the coaching team will be announced shortly.
Backhaus himself brings a lot of know-how with him through his long career and experience in various leagues. Born in Witten, during his playing days he played for Kickers Offenbach and Union Berlin, among others, as well as in international leagues in Cyprus, Malta, Saudi Arabia and Hong Kong. He also successfully acquired the DFB Pro license in January 2025, which now ranks him among the most qualified coaches in German football. In this context, the DFB honored 16 graduates of its highest coaching course, including Backhaus. This course included numerous learning units and visits to renowned professional clubs.
Eintracht fans can be excited about the next steps with Heiner Backhaus at the helm. The expectations for him are high, but the right mix of experience and fresh air could be the key to success. If the new coach develops his full potential, he could position Eintracht well in the second division and provide new impetus. In any case, the exciting question remains: How will the team develop under his leadership?
