Selimbegovic before a key game: Alemannia Aachen is fighting against relegation!
Alemannia Aachen is full of energy under its new coach Mersad Selimbegović, who began his coaching career at SSV Jahn Regensburg in 2012. Selimbegović, who was active for Jahn as a player and coach between 2006 and 2023, won his first game with Aachen 3-1 against VfB Stuttgart II. Now a special challenge awaits him on Saturday at 2 p.m. when his new team meets SSV Jahn Regensburg, his former club, which is also currently under pressure.
The game will be broadcast live on stream and on BR television, with commentator Marcel Seufert and presenter Julia Büchler, which provides additional thrills. Both teams are currently in a relegation battle, which makes the encounter even more crucial. Aachen have just 19 points and find themselves just three points above the vulnerable 17th place, while Regensburg are on slower footing after an impressive 4-0 win against TSV 1860 Munich. Jahn also won the Bavarian State Cup against FC Ingolstadt, which gives him some tailwind.
The new coach and his ambitions
Mersad Selimbegović, who has signed a contract with Alemannia Aachen until 2027, brings with him broad experience that he has gained over decades in youth and professional football. After his time at Regensburg, he worked at F.C. Hansa Rostock and the Belgian second division club KAS Eupen and has led a total of 150 games as head coach in the 2nd Bundesliga. Rachid Azzouzi, Sports Director of Alemannia Aachen, praises Selimbegović's ambition and his ability to build a structured team, which is particularly important in the current situation.
Selimbegović will lead the first training session on Thursday and can rely on a strong coaching team that includes assistant coach Ilyas Trenz, athletics coach Mele Mosqueda, goalkeeping coach Ivica Ljubicic and assistant coach Analyze Lars Christopher Manz. Carsten Wissing will also take over the management of the Aachen A-youth team, which shows that work is being done on all fronts.
A look at the relegation battle
All eyes are on the upcoming duel against Regensburg, which is of central importance not only for Alemannia Aachen. The pressure is felt on both sides as both teams are in the bottom third of the table. Defense in particular will be the key to success for Selimbegović, especially against an opponent who, like Regensburg, has recently had a strong performance.
It remains to be seen how the new structures under Selimbegović will affect the team's performance. The fans of Alemannia Aachen can hope for an exciting and decisive encounter that opens up many possibilities and could potentially have a decisive influence on the course of the season.
