A breath of fresh air is blowing through the Laer elementary school in Bochum: today the first step in redesigning the schoolyard was announced. The aim is to offer children a welcoming and active environment that encourages them to move. The first construction phase in the eastern area of the area was completed in 2024 and offers promising opportunities for games and sports.
The plans for the redesign include an open entrance area in the western part of the schoolyard and a “moving part” in the east, which will be redesigned with a varied topography. Here the asphalt will have undulating shapes and the ground will change in height, creating an exciting terrain for the children. Built-in trampolines also expand the range of exercise and ensure fun.
Sustainability in focus
Another highlight are the new play and plant islands that will be created in the schoolyard. These islands not only offer shade and places to stay, but also space for various play and sports equipment. The old underground pipes under the schoolyard will also be replaced, with a modern separation system for rainwater and dirty water being installed. The rainwater is returned to the natural water cycle, which takes the school's environmental awareness into account.
The construction work is scheduled to be completed by autumn 2026 and will be carried out in several stages so that the redesigned areas can be used at an early stage. The city of Bochum will receive funding of 1.9 million euros for this extensive redesign, which will cost a total of almost three million euros. The detailed plans can be viewed both in the district office and online for interested citizens.
