From November 2025, Bochum Central Station will face drastic changes. A new construction site will be a significant intervention in rail operations and passenger mobility at this important junction. The construction work, which starts on Monday, November 17th, at 5 a.m. and lasts until Wednesday, December 10th, at 9 p.m., is part of extensive bridge work between Bochum Central Station and Witten Central Station Ruhr24 reported.
A whole package of measures will significantly restrict the regional train lines RE 16 and RB 40 during the construction period. While the RE 16 between Essen main station and Hagen main station is completely canceled, the RB 40 between Bochum main station and Witten main station will also no longer run. Replacement buses will run every half hour during peak hours, starting daily from Witten to Bochum at 5:15 a.m., with the first arrival in Bochum expected at 5:33 a.m. In the opposite direction, the buses leave Essen Central Station at 4:14 a.m. Things are going particularly quickly at Bochum main station, where replacement buses leave for Witten from 4:57 a.m.
For travelers who are drawn to the nightlife, additional night trips are also planned between November 22nd and December 7th. The last buses from Witten to Bochum start at 2:47 a.m. and vice versa at 2:45 a.m. At the same time, passengers can switch to the S-Bahn lines S1 and S5 to continue their journey. But there remains a downside: bicycles and electric scooters are not allowed on the replacement buses.
Extensive construction sites and their effects
The construction work in Bochum is not just limited to the main train station. There is currently also a closure of the main route between Essen and Dortmund, which will last until October 31, 2025.
