Neunkirchen-Seelscheid: This is how the community is planning housing for refugees!

In Neunkirchen-Seelscheid, the mayor Nicole Berka is emphasizing the issue of accommodating refugees. Faced with new allocations, the municipality must take measures to meet the legal obligation to accommodate. An important project is the planned purchase of residential buildings to meet the need for accommodation, such as ksta.de reported.

The originally planned container block in Hochhausen, which was supposed to offer space for up to 132 people, has to be reduced in size due to a gas pipe that unexpectedly appeared underground. Six containers that were intended for accommodation will now be dismantled and replaced by two smaller units. The municipality emphasizes that this will not cause any additional costs for the intermunicipal development company Neunkirchen-Seelscheid/Much (GKU). The dismantling of the containers has already begun and the community is in close contact with the responsible energy supplier.

Challenges in integration

The situation shows how important it is to find suitable housing for new immigrants. According to the German Institute for Standardization (Difu), housing is a basic need that forms the basis for a self-determined life. The housing market is particularly tense in large cities where many refugees live. In Neunkirchen-Seelscheid, work is being done at decentralized locations to create alternative forms of housing and to meet the needs of refugees.

Another sticking point are the delays at the Höfferhof in Neunkirchen, where modular buildings for 84 refugees were originally planned. However, after citizen protests, the administration only provided 48 places. This set of topics, including the open questions about the parking situation and the future of the sports field, was postponed at the last council meeting before the summer break. The community is concerned about the ongoing delays, the duration of which cannot currently be predicted.

The future housing market

The everyday life of refugees is strongly influenced by the challenges on the housing market. In order to promote integration, a transition from temporary accommodation to the regular housing market is essential. In this regard, there are various models and concepts that are implemented differently regionally. In the general strategy for integrating refugees, closer alliances must be formed between municipalities, the housing industry and civil society, as set out in the BBSR's analyses, which point out, among other things, regional distributions and infrastructure requirements. This information is of great importance for future urban development and housing policy bbsr.bund.de.

It remains to be seen how the municipality of Neunkirchen-Seelscheid will overcome the challenges ahead, especially with regard to integration and the need for housing, which is likely to increase further due to the influx of refugees. Finding your own home or suitable accommodation requires both creativity and a good knack for implementing groundbreaking measures.
