Compulsory testing for gas systems: safety when camping from June 19, 2025!
Motorhomes and caravans are very popular in the Coesfeld district - holidaymakers are looking forward to the freedom of traveling with caravans etc. But there will soon be new regulations: From June 19, 2025, all recreational vehicles with permanently installed liquid gas systems, i.e. motorhomes and caravans, must have a valid gas test in accordance with DVGW G 607. This regulation brings with it some important changes that will affect both safety and legal aspects. So far it has been possible to travel without these tests, although this entails significant risks.
The main reason for the introduction of this new inspection requirement is the dangers posed by old or improperly maintained gas systems. Defects such as brittle hoses or cracked seals can have dangerous consequences, from uncontrolled gas leaks to potential explosions. In this context, TÜV Nord strongly advises against traveling without a valid inspection sticker, even if it is only a short trip.
What does this mean for campers?
From the specified day, all owners of mobile homes and caravans who have not had an inspection before June 19, 2024 are obliged to have an initial inspection carried out. Thereafter, a new inspection must be carried out every two years, regardless of the general inspection (HU), which is still a familiar term for many vehicle drivers. This regulation not only applies to operational devices, but also affects the entire gas system, including gas pipes, connections as well as safety-relevant components and ventilation openings. Uninspected vehicles even have to expect fines - from 15 euros if the deadline is exceeded by two to four months to 60 euros if the deadline is exceeded by more than eight months.
Safety is the top priority here. Ultimately, the regulation aims to reduce the dangers of cooking, cooling and heating in mobile homes and caravans and to prevent possible accidents. It is important that the tests are carried out by recognized experts, such as TÜV testing centers or specialist workshops. Many of these service providers also offer mobile testing, which is particularly useful if you don't want to travel far to make sure everything is in order.
How much does the exam cost?
The cost of a gas test usually amounts to 40 to 80 euros and takes between 20 and 45 minutes. If you take the exam in good time, you can start the next camping season more relaxed. All of this is not happening without good reason: the risk of gas leaks must be taken seriously - too many accidents have happened due to defective systems and the new regulations are intended to remedy this.
Not only safety, but also the receipt of insurance coverage can be at risk if there is no inspection sticker. Particularly when checking campsites, this can mean that you are not even granted access. The new regulations are therefore not only a question of security, but also an absolute must in order not to get into legal difficulties.
The new regulations regarding the obligation to inspect gas systems are an important step towards safety for all campers. Find out in good time so that you can get your vehicle up to date in good time and start the next holiday season without any worries.
