Oak for friendship: Dortmund and Bilbao celebrate togetherness!
An exciting encounter for football fans is coming up, as Borussia Dortmund and Athletic Bilbao played in the Champions League on October 1st. In the run-up to the match there was a very special gift that symbolized the bond between both cities and their fans. The Basque Association Foundation presented Dortmund with a young oak tree. We in Dortmund reports that this oak is a sign of freedom for the Basques and is traditionally given as a gift to sister cities.
The ceremonial handover took place in the presence of Dortmund's mayor Ute Mais, BVB managing director Carsten Cramer and Athletic Bilbao vice-president Nerea Ortiz. The oak was planted on the bee nature trail on Maurice-Vast-Straße, supported by the Parks Department and the International Relations team of the city of Dortmund. The tree also includes a plaque with the inspirational inscription: “We came as rivals, we left as friends.”
Preparing for the big game
But that wasn't all! The two clubs also thought of something special before the game. On Wednesday, the day of the match, Athletic Bilbao organized a fan meeting with varied activities. A highlight was the “Walking Football” led by captain Carlos Gurpegui, which took place on the BVB facilities. Fans of Borussia Dortmund and Athletic Bilbao came together here to have fun together. They say that the away trip often counts as much as the game itself! OneFootball has reported that the atmosphere among fans is considered familiar, respectful and happy.
The focus of the activities was also the planting of the oak tree, which will take place after the game around 12:30 p.m. The motto: “Thank you, Dortmund, eskerrik asko” – an expression of a deep friendship that goes beyond sporting competition. This initiative by Athletic Bilbao will continue at future away games in the Champions League to celebrate this special bond.
The cultural dimension of football
Football is more than just a game; it also reflects the cultural, political and social dynamics of our society. Hoynofumo highlights that sport builds bridges between different cultures and addresses important issues such as cohesion and social justice. Jerseys aren't just athletic wear; they represent the identity and pride of fans and players, and during international tournaments they become an expression of national hopes and feelings of community.
The relationship between Dortmund and Bilbao, which develops within the framework of this friendship and shared football traditions, shows how sport can serve as a medium to forge friendships across regional and national borders and promote cultural diversity. It is the same feeling of unity that both fans experience when they come together in the stadium and the city.
Football goes beyond the pitch and becomes a catalyst for friendship and understanding. In the end, it wasn't just about winning on the field, but also about the hearts of the people who adore this wonderful sport.
