NEXT LEVEL Festival: Discover the future of digital art in Dortmund!
The Next Level Festival is just around the corner and promises to offer an exciting program all about digital culture in Dortmund from November 13th to 16th, 2025. Under the motto “TRANSmission” the focus is on art, technology and society. Those interested can look forward to a mix of game and media art as well as performances that will take place at various locations in the city, including the Academy for Theater and Digitality, the Schauspiel Dortmund and the Dortmunder U, which will serve as the central festival location. Nordstadtblogger reports that there are over 20 art house games to discover in the “Games Parcours”, including the chaotic “Lose Control” and the dystopian “a permanent echo”.
A highlight is the opening with the live performance “Waluigi’s Purgatory” by the group DMSTFCTN. Combining gaming, acting and music, this interactive piece is about an AI trapped in failed AI purgatory. With the help of the audience, the AI goes on a journey of discovery to learn the eerie stories of other AIs and explore the contradictions of their existence. Another innovative project is the Department of Interfaced Dimensions (D.I.D), which offers an interactive mixed reality experience and allows participants to take on the roles of observers, manipulators or players. Dortmund.de highlights that this presentation addresses questions of identity and control and is an example of the festival's international network.
Art meets technology
The Academy for Theater and Digitality is a central location for technology-driven plays, performances and VR experiences. Here, international artists will show their works that reflect the digital change in art. The Künstlerhaus Dortmund will also open its doors as an open laboratory for digital arts and present a media art exhibition. Among other things, it will be shown how digital combinations and mixed reality technologies influence current art forms. Art Plaza emphasizes how virtual and augmented reality enable new forms of creative work.
In the Dortmunder U, visitors can expect innovative narrative worlds in the projects “The Farewell” and “Zwei Hands”. In addition, the “Enjoy Community” format in the cinema in the U offers the opportunity to exchange ideas with specialist audiences and artists. The festival is not only a meeting place for digital media and art, but also a platform for critically examining the effects of digital technologies on our society.
Visitors should not miss the chance to not only discover new games at the Next Level Festival in Dortmund, but also to have exciting discussions about the future of digital art.
