PottPilz is revolutionizing the construction industry with sustainable mycelium materials!
A start-up from Dortmund has made big steps in the exciting world of sustainable materials. The company PottPilz, founded by agricultural scientist Hendrik Wever and chemical engineer Lennard Bennemann, relies on innovative mycelium-based solutions for the construction and office industries. The two founders worked intensively on the idea of developing environmentally friendly building materials from local agricultural residues and mushroom mycelium. PottPilz is pursuing the “MycoFloor” project, which is intended to produce a flooring system that is both sustainable and circular, similar to cork floors. TU Dortmund reports that PottPilz receives support from the EXIST start-up grant, which provides founders with attractive twelve-month financing to develop a business plan.
The use of mycelium as a material has given PottPilz an advantage as mycelium is derived from mushrooms and is considered an innovative resource for sustainable solutions. Loud HydroSwiss Mycelium plays a central role in the transformation to a more sustainable future and supports both the circular economy and the energy transition. It is biodegradable and can be used in various applications such as environmentally friendly packaging and consumer products. Mycelium also outperforms conventional materials in thermal and sound insulation and helps reduce CO2 emissions.
PottPilz: A connection to science
PottPilz is closely linked to the Technical University of Dortmund and benefits from the expertise of Professor Jörg Tiller from the Faculty of Biological and Chemical Engineering. This close collaboration has enabled the start-up not only to pool competencies, but also to gain access to important resources. By participating in the Dortmund Economic Development Agency's greenhouse.ruhr program, PottPilz receives individual coaching and access to a broad network of experts who work in the field of sustainable materials.
PottPilz's vision is to create a new category of materials that are regionally produced and biodegradable. This could not only contribute to decarbonization but also reduce dependence on fossil fuels. HydroSwiss highlights how mycelium provides an environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic materials and can be used in the construction, fashion and packaging industries.
Overall, PottPilz's commitment and the use of mycelium in the construction industry shows that innovative ideas and sustainable materials can go hand in hand to protect our environment and bring about positive change. In this regard, the founders have a sense of the right way to address ecological challenges.
