Traditional shop Pick” in Dortmund announces clearance sales!

There are currently several clearance sales taking place in Dortmund's Indupark, which are having a major impact on the local retail landscape. The traditional specialist store “Pick” officially started a clearance sale on July 21, 2025 and is offering up to 50% discount on a wide selection of floor coverings, especially carpets. The family business has existed since 1898 and also operates a branch in Mülheim an der Ruhr. However, the exact future of the business remains nebulous as neither management nor employees have yet commented on it. Customers can benefit from the attractive discounts on the website until July 31, 2025, although it remains unclear what will happen after that. The situation is reminiscent of the approaching sales of “Multi Polster”, a furniture store that has never been really profitable in the past and whose closure has already been announced for December 7, 2024.

“Multi Polster” is saying goodbye to Dortmund after more than a decade. Consumers are invited to bargain, with the prospect of discounts of up to a whopping 80 percent. Managing director Roger Tosette attributes the closure to the branch's poor profitability. In the past, the company has been selling upholstered furniture such as sofas and armchairs since fall 2012. Meanwhile, the employees will be distributed to other locations in North Rhine-Westphalia, as “Multi Polster” operates a total of 13 furniture stores in the region. The nearest branches after the closure are in Essen and Schwelm. Other stores in Dortmund are also at risk, including a well-known global brand for household goods.

The situation in retail

The current situation reflects a comprehensive change in German retail. This includes the sale of goods to end consumers, including furniture and floor coverings. According to HDE, sales recently amounted to around 649.9 billion euros, with the food segment making up the largest submarket. Despite the challenges brought about by the corona pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war, there are also bright spots, such as the increase in online trading, which has grown from 0.2 percent to around 6.5 percent since 2000. Nevertheless, stationary retail remains very popular with consumers.

Consolidation in the retail sector means that smaller businesses are coming under increasing pressure. At a time when it is difficult for many to stay in business, the closures of “Pick” and “Multi Polster” send an unmistakable message. The importance of discounters and online retail is increasing, while traditional department stores and smaller specialist shops are losing market share. These changes not only put a strain on businesses, but also on the associated employment relationships; after all, retail in Germany employs around three million people.

It remains to be seen how the closed stores and retail changes will have a lasting impact on the local economy. In Dortmund, where many such shops once enjoyed loyal customers, the uncertainty is now palpable.
