Classical music inspires 500 children in Heimbach – a new experience!

The “Tensions” concert series at the Heimbach Art Nouveau power plant has set itself the task of getting young people interested in classical music. The Düren art support association, under the direction of artistic director Christian Tetzlaff, organized an impressive school concert that was intended to introduce 550 school children to the fascination of music. Tetzlaff explained that it is particularly challenging to get children, who are often immersed in the world of social media, into music. Nevertheless, he believes that music can convey strong emotions such as love and compassion. KSTA reports that...

The school concert was the centerpiece of the event, with participants including the Burgau-Gymnasium Düren, the Catholic Girls' High School Jülich and primary schools from Heimbach and the surrounding area. Moderated by Isabelle Vogt, who wrote a new story on the topic of “Carnival of the Animals”, she encouraged the children to actively participate, which met with great interest among the little ones. Musical pieces such as Béla Bartók's “Mosquito Dance” and excerpts from Prokofiev's “Peter and the Wolf” captivated the audience. Tetzlaff himself also added to the liveliness of the concert when he made his violin whinny. The crowning finale was an impressive drum performance that received huge applause.

Music education aims to stimulate interest in classical music and overcome barriers. Through innovative formats and school projects, the actors want to reach new target groups and give young people the chance to experience music as part of their culture. The concept of concert pedagogy plays a central role here. Organizers and musicians are increasingly working with schools and social institutions to introduce children and young people to the diversity of music. KUBI describes that...

An additional program item are the new Sunday morning concerts for families, which have been well received. The relevance of these programs is also reflected in the number of visitors: In total, the 2025 concert series had around 7,000 visitors. The positive response to the family concerts shows that cultural exchange through music education plays a valuable role in many people's everyday lives. The influence of projects like “Tensions” should not be underestimated, as they train the listeners' reception behavior through targeted communication and thus promote a culture of active music-making. Wikipedia adds that...

At its core, music education is about arousing curiosity about music and fostering relationships with music, regardless of age or background. In this context, offers such as instrument presentations and workshops are important in order to make it easier for children to access music. Various initiatives, including competitions in the field of music education, help to raise the level of quality and promote best practices. The variety of formats is crucial in order to respond to the different needs of the target groups.

The future of music education will be accompanied by regular surveys and studies that observe and document the development of these projects in a social context. In particular, the importance of music education as a catalyst for social developments underlines the need to promote creative and integrative approaches.
