A59 closure near Duisburg: traffic collapse threatens from tomorrow!

Starting tomorrow, the A59 near Duisburg will be a bottleneck for many drivers. An extensive renovation of the Berlin Bridge is pending, which is associated with numerous restrictions. How radiokw.de reported, the A59 will be opened from the southern to the northern direction of travel at the level of the Berlin Bridge from 5 a.m. on August 12, 2025. But the relief is only short-lived.

On the same day, at 8 p.m., the opposite direction towards Dinslaken will be closed. This work takes around two weeks and affects the section between the Duisburg and Duisburg-Nord intersections. The Berlin Bridge is over 1,800 meters long and is considered one of the longest motorway bridges in Germany. But its condition is worrying: numerous cracks in the steel have meant that the bridge can only be used until 2029.

Closures and diversions

The renovation work is part of a multi-week program that covers the last four weeks of the 2025 summer holidays. During the closure period, the A59 will be completely closed on both sides in the area of the Berlin Bridge, as the city of Duisburg explains in a press release. The city urges drivers to observe the signposted detours and recommends a large bypass using the surrounding motorway network, including the A3, A40, A42 and A57. No alternative routes are planned within the city in order to minimize the burden on the city's road network.

The Kaiserberg intersection in particular could come to a standstill during construction work. The city of Duisburg and the road traffic authority are expecting increased traffic volumes and traffic jams, which unfortunately cannot be avoided in the coming weeks.

Reasons for the measures

The renovation of the dilapidated A59 bridge is urgently needed. The work will involve installing a longitudinal beam and replacing a reinforcing plate to restore the safety of the bridge. Experts point out that work on bridge safety is essential to avoid serious dangers to road users, such as this Federal Office for Materials and Building Materials emphasized. Infrastructure security must always be a top priority.

The renovation work will not only be a challenge for commuters and residents in Duisburg, but it is also a necessary step towards a safe and stable transport infrastructure. We appeal to all road users to exercise the necessary patience and consideration during this time.

Overall, the coming weeks will be a tough test for many drivers. Stay informed to make the best routing decisions.
