Creepy bike tour lights up Duisburg's streets for Halloween!
Last Friday, November 5th, 2025, around 50 bicycle enthusiasts from Cologne met for a spooktacular bicycle tour in Duisburg. The event, known as "Critical Mass", took place in front of the city's main train station and accompanied participants through the festively decorated city center, Neudorf, Duissern and all the way to Ruhrort. Halloween was not only a fitting backdrop, but also set a creative tone, as many of the bikes were spookily decorated. One participant rode a bike filled with skeletons, and another even transported an entire grave on his trailer.
The approximately 20-kilometer route was completed in cooperation with the Halloween Nightride Niederrhein and was well received by passers-by and other revelers who were on their way to Halloween parties. “The response was enormous!” said Herbert Fürmann, chairman of ADFC Duisburg. However, he also drew attention to an important problem: the often poor conditions of the cycle paths in Duisburg.
Incidentally, the Critical Mass is not an official event of the ADFC Duisburg, but is based on the initiative of the cycling community.
Further dates and developments
For those who don't want to miss next month's spooky rides: The next date for Critical Mass has already been set and will take place on November 28, 2025. Cycling enthusiasts in Cologne and the surrounding area can look forward to another creative tour that is in the spirit of cycling and community.
But what exactly does it mean that such events are “critical”? In a broader sense, the term refers to a tendency to severe and unfavorable criticism or to the involvement of careful judgment. It is a term that is important not only in transport but in many areas of life and is often seen as a turning point or a vital decision. Merriam Webster offers numerous explanations that illuminate the different facets of the term “critical”.
In this sense, the Critical Mass in Duisburg may not only have been a celebration for cycling fans, but also sent a clear message about how important good infrastructure is for cyclists. Such events help raise public awareness: There is still work to be done!
