Blitz operation in Chicago: Trump's fight against illegal immigrants begins!
Things are going haywire in Chicago at the moment: The US Department of Homeland Security has announced a lightning immigration operation called “Operation Midway Blitz”. This targeted operation is intended to target so-called “criminal illegal aliens” living in the region. That reports Radio Ennepe Ruhr. However, details about the process of the operation are scarce. Indications are that city officials were not informed of the increased measures, something Mayor Brandon Johnson has loudly criticized.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker is also not happy and accuses the Trump administration of putting unnecessary fear in the minds of Illinoisans. Loud USA Today Former President Donald Trump even hinted that he might send federal troops to Chicago in light of the violent incidents on Labor Day. Pritzker and Johnson speak of “tyranny” in this context, while Trump describes Chicago as a “very dangerous place” and promises to quickly defuse the situation.
A tragic occasion
There is a tragic event behind “Operation Midway Blitz”: The initiative is launched in honor of Katie Abraham, a 20-year-old woman who was killed in a traffic accident by an undocumented immigrant in January. The alleged perpetrator, Julio Cucul-Bol, is also in the United States illegally, bringing additional tension to the immigration and crime debate, as NPR reported.
The door is now wide open for cooperation between various federal agencies, with hundreds of officers set to be deployed, possibly even from a naval base outside Chicago. Tricia McLaughlin, the assistant secretary of Homeland Security, says the operation aims to focus on the “worst of the worst.”
Protests and resistance
As befits this situation, resistance arises. Immigrant rights activists have sharply criticized the planned ICE raids. According to reports, arrests have already been made, although the number is expected to be much higher. Alderwoman Jeylú Gutiérrez expressed concern that the raids were not really designed to catch the worst criminals, but rather to terrorize communities. For many people in Chicago, this is an attack on what they see as their right to live in peace.
Additionally, the Illinois Coalition of Immigrant and Refugee Rights has set up a hotline to report sightings of ICE agents. Pritzker has made it clear that Trump's threats against American cities should not be viewed as normal. At a time when political tensions are rising sharply, there is every indication that Chicago is currently in a dangerous political situation.
It remains to be seen how the situation will develop and what measures will actually be implemented. But early signs suggest that many citizens and local leaders are determined to resist the militarization of immigration policy.
