UWV Mechernich: A breath of fresh air for the 2025 local elections!

An important change is imminent in Mechernich: The Independent Voters' Association (UWV) is sharpening its profile and reorganizing its personnel in order to meet the challenges of the local elections on September 14, 2025. Dr. Manfred Rechs, the chairman of the UWV, leads the initiative and emphasizes that the UWV has been acting as a political movement for 60 years that opposes rigid party politics. Founded in response to the dissatisfaction of many citizens, the UWV does not see itself as a classic party, but rather wants to bring fresh ideas into local politics.

“We are proud of our independence,” explains Heinz Schmitz, a founding member of the UWV. The movement sees itself as a driving force in Mechernich politics and has proven itself in crucial moments in the past, such as a stalemate in the city council in the 1990s. A ten-point paper, developed in consultation with citizens, already presents concrete approaches, including the construction of a mining museum.

Commitment and fresh ideas

According to current information about the local elections, the UWV candidates have shown a high level of commitment by being actively involved in various clubs, the fire department and the carnival. Karl-Heinz Seeliger, the deputy chairman, emphasizes the central role that local needs play in the selection of candidates. With Benjamin Lorenz, the UWV also has a young candidate who wants to bring new perspectives and fresh ideas to the election campaign.

The list of UWV candidates shows the diversity and commitment of the movement, which is made up of experienced and new faces:

Alternative to current conditions

In Weilerswist, a fellow citizen was disappointed with the representation of the political situation in the council and said that the UWV could not promise immediate changes, but would like to develop clear positions and ideas. Many citizens are dissatisfied with the current situation and have the opportunity to vote for the UWV on September 13, 2025 to influence the political course in their community. In the coming election, voters will have the choice between the status quo and a movement that advocates for people-oriented policies.

In addition, it is expected that WDR will offer a candidate check for the local elections on September 14, 2025, which will help voters to find out about the candidates' views. Short video statements are published in a digital format in which the applicants for top municipal offices present their positions. WDR encourages interested candidates to get in touch.

The UWV has a lot planned and will certainly have to engage a good portion of the voting population in order to communicate its ideas and approaches. The upcoming election on September 14, 2025 could be a decision for many citizens for a new citizen-oriented politics in Mechernich and the surrounding area.
