Ambulance surprise: tablet stolen in an emergency!

An astonishing incident occurred on August 10, 2025 in Gelsenkirchen when a tablet was stolen from an ambulance. The ambulance was parked at Grenzstrasse 60 at around 3:20 a.m., where fire department employees were dealing with a medical emergency in the house. While the side door of the ambulance was open, a thief took advantage of the opportunity and escaped with the valuable device. An attentive witness filmed the crime, but the suspect initially managed to escape undetected.

The police became aware of the suspect around 5:00 a.m. when they spotted him on Georgstrasse. The 48-year-old man, a Turk with no fixed address, is already known to the police for property crimes. During a search, police found the stolen tablet in his waistband and took it into safe custody. The tablet was then returned to the fire department. During his arrest, the suspect gave contradictory information about the crime, which made the investigation even more difficult.

The security situation in NRW

This incident comes in the context of a general increase in crime in Germany. According to data from Statista, around 5.63 million crimes were recorded in 2022, with theft being one of the most common crimes. In 2022 alone, there were 1.78 million police-recorded thefts, an increase compared to previous years. North Rhine-Westphalia is particularly affected here, with over 23,500 residential burglaries, which account for more than 35% of all cases in the federal states.

The statistics on thefts and robberies show that the clearance rate for burglaries is relatively low at 16.1%, while the rate for robbery crimes is significantly higher at almost 60%. These figures highlight the challenges faced by the police and the need to further intensify crime-fighting measures.

However, in the case of the theft from the ambulance, the police are satisfied that the tablet was quickly recovered and the suspect was arrested. Such quick wins are important to increase citizens' trust in security authorities and send a clear message to other potential perpetrators.

Overall, the situation surrounding thefts and security issues in Gelsenkirchen and beyond remains an urgent issue. While police work is certainly improving thanks to modern investigative methods and faster response times, solving thefts is still a challenging task.
