Lullusfest 2025: The countdown for Bad Hersfeld's folk festival is on!

Bad Hersfeld is ready for the 2025 edition of the traditional Lullus Festival, which is considered the oldest folk festival in Germany. As Osthessen News reports, the first showmen have already set up their stands, giving the city a festive flair. The ceremonial kick-off will take place next Monday, October 7th, 2025, at 12 p.m.

Traditionally, the festival, also affectionately known as “Lolls”, has been celebrated since 852 in the week of October 16th. Every year around 500,000 visitors come to the city, who gather on the 1.3 hectare market square and the 0.5 hectare Linggplatz. The Lullus Festival is available to locals as the “fifth season” and celebrates the founding of the Benedictine monastery in Bad Hersfeld by Archbishop Lullus of Mainz.

A colorful hustle and bustle: attractions and cuisine

Attractions such as the 47 meter high chaos pendulum, which whizzes through the air at speeds of up to 80 km/h, provide thrills. “Look”, a spectacular viewing attraction, offers an 80 meter high all-round view – a real highlight from Gütersloh. Adrenaline junkies can look forward to the “kick-down”, while family rides such as “Fantasia” delight younger visitors.

The gastronomic side is also not neglected. Cult host Harry Ghebru and his successor Anh Quang Tran from the Japanese restaurant “Karma” provide the culinary delights in the Lollszelt. The festival is accompanied musically by the disc jockeys Eckhard Zoll and Matthias Becker, who ensure a great atmosphere.

Preparations are in full swing

Most of the 52 providers of rides and stalls were selected from a total of 562 applications. Games stalls for lottery, throwing and shooting games will also be present during the festival. The first showmen have already celebrated their arrival and transformed the festival grounds into a colorful entertainment paradise.

Traditions and time-honored things are very important at the Lullus Festival. The celebrations include the lighting of the Lullus fire, whose roots date back to 1926. This tradition is lit after a special saying and is a valuable part of the festival.

Although Lullusfest has had its fair share of ups and downs - including some cancellations in the past - the anticipation for this year's event is only heightened by its post-pandemic return. In recent years, the festival has seen an impressive maintenance of visitor numbers despite adverse circumstances.
