Action against poverty: Free meals in Hagen on October 29th!
In the heart of Hagen, specifically in the cafeteria “Ma(h)lzeit?!” of the Caritas Association, a very special event will take place today, October 29, 2025. Free meals are on the program as part of the Action Against Poverty - an initiative that aims to promote access to food and social contacts. Between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. all residents of the house and interested guests are cordially invited to enjoy a cheap and good meal.
Delicious offerings such as warm chicken soup and a vegetarian chickpea curry are planned. As a sweet finale there is a praline, beautifully served on a handmade paper heart. This commitment is actively supported by Ann-Christin Höll from the Malteser aid organization and Anja Majus, the Caritas coordinator. “Keep the doors open – ensure general social advice” is the motto of the event, which is part of the Poverty Weeks. The focus here is on the exchange and support of people.
Action against poverty – the background
Poverty shows itself in many facets. According to the Federal Government It not only affects financial aspects, but also education, health and social participation. Low-income people often suffer from shorter life expectancies and have less access to education. Over 700 million people worldwide live in extreme poverty, a condition that the international community aims to end by 2030. This global effort is also reflected in local initiatives like today's event.
The federal government has committed to halving the proportion of people in poverty and implementing social protection systems for everyone. In Germany, people are considered poor if their income is below 60% of the average - this applies to around 15.9% of the population. In order to improve this situation, there are various social benefits such as unemployment benefit, citizen's benefit and child benefit that are specifically available for low-income households.
Perspectives and challenges
Despite rising wages, a falling proportion of unemployed and new minimum wage regulations, the question of poverty in Germany remains explosive. Carrying out such actions requires not only commitment, but also continuous reflection on future offerings. Regarding today's activities, there is still uncertainty about how they can be sustained in the coming years. Nevertheless, today shows that it is important to fight together against poverty and strengthen social networks.
In summary: The campaign against poverty in Hagen is not just a culinary event, but also an important step towards social justice and participation. Every contribution counts, and not only the stomach but also the heart is filled here.
The initiative is supported by the commitment of numerous partners. The importance of such events for the community is undeniable - because together we get more out of our time and give each other support.
