E-bike accident in Hagen: 63-year-old injured after collision!

A possible commotion in road traffic occurred on Friday, June 21, 2025, in the intersection area of Schwerte Street and Monument Street in Hagen. A 63-year-old e-bike rider was slightly injured around 3:10 p.m. when he was overlooked by a 26-year-old driver who wanted to turn left. The e-bike rider was immediately taken to a hospital, but was quickly released after outpatient treatment. This type of accident is not an isolated case, as current accident statistics show.

E-bike riders are increasingly involved in accidents, which is particularly important for older people. According to a survey by the Federal Statistical Office, almost 24,000 Pedelec users had accidents in Germany in 2023, which represents a drastic increase compared to 2014, when there were only around 2,200 accidents. The proportion of Pedelec accident victims under the age of 45 rose from 10.7% to 31.2% within just nine years.

Statistics and risks for older e-bike riders

The group of people over 50 is particularly at the forefront when it comes to accident statistics. They are often involved in incidents, as an analysis by the Central Hesse police headquarters shows. In Giessen, the number of accidents involving e-bikes has increased significantly in recent years. For example, the number of accidents increased from 46 in 2018 to 116 in 2022. The 50 to 60 age group contributes significantly to these statistics.

The average age of Pedelec accident victims in 2023 was 53 years, while it was only 42 years for non-motorized bicycles. These figures are alarming, especially when you consider that the proportion of people over 65 years of age who were involved in non-motorized bicycle accidents was 16.7%. This shows that road safety for older cyclists needs to be further improved. Initiatives such as driving safety training from the ADFC are therefore becoming increasingly important in order to reduce uncertainty when driving.

The e-bike as a modern means of transport

E-bikes offer many advantages in everyday life: They are cheaper than cars, get us to our destination faster and make parking easy. According to statistics from 2021, one in eight households in Germany already had an e-bike. These trends are underpinned by the increasing number of accidents. The proportion of fatal Pedelec accidents rose from 39 in 2014 to 188 in 2023 - a drastic increase that is worrying.

The technical differences between e-bikes and conventional bicycles also require additional skills from riders. E-bikes, for example, often have different braking behavior due to disc brakes, which can make riding a challenge without appropriate practice. Today's slightly injured 63-year-old e-bike rider is one of many who suffer from these challenges in traffic.

It is important for all e-bike riders to be vigilant and aware of the risks. The incident in Hagen is just one example of many that reminds us of the importance of safe traffic conditions.
