The legendary Cologne musician Wolfgang Niedecken and his band BAP are facing a very special event: On July 10, 2026, a concert will take place in the Rheinenergie Stadium to properly celebrate BAP's 50th anniversary. For Niedecken, who is already 74 years old, this stadium is more than just a place to create - he affectionately refers to it as his “living room”.
“It just feels good to perform here,” said the frontman, already remembering the many great experiences he and his band had there. BAP has already played in the stadium three times in the past, but only as an opening act for big stars like the Rolling Stones. Now it will be the first time that they perform as the main band, which is a great honor for everyone involved.
Preparations for the big concert
The anticipation is palpable because Niedecken already has a clear idea of how the concert should go. He knows which song he wants to start and end with, while choosing the track list for the rest of the evening gives him new ideas every day. Although the idea of playing in front of so many people initially made him a little hesitant, he decided to see this moment as the right occasion for an impressive anniversary.
But the anniversary celebrations don't stop at the stadium concert. BAP had already planned a series of performances that would take them from Berlin to Munich and from Mainz to Chemnitz. The tour starts on June 20, 2025 in Berlin and includes numerous events and festivals. The Wacken Festival in July, where the band will take part, will certainly be a highlight.
Wolfgang Niedecken: A life for music
The Cologne native, born on March 30, 1951, has made a name for himself not only as a musician, but also as a painter. In 1976 he founded the Cologne rock band BAP and has since made the Cologne language and culture known far beyond the borders of his homeland. Niedecken is the only remaining founding member and has released several solo albums in his career. He is also known for his social and political commitment and was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class in 2013.
He gave his first concert with BAP on July 1, 1977 and soon became known as the “Cologne Dylan”. His work is characterized by a deep understanding of music and the urge to put stories into text form. The band achieved their breakthrough in 1979 with the LP “Wolfgang Niedecken’s BAP rocks other kölsche Leeder” and has since conquered the hearts of many fans.
