Class 111 back in Hamm: Regular use and excursion trains!

There are currently exciting things to observe in Hamm (Westf). The legendary 111 series, which played a key role in regional and long-distance transport for a long time, is back and creates lively scenes at the station. How lok-report.de reported, the 111 series will be in use in the RE3 replacement service between Hamm and Düsseldorf from September 22nd to October 17th, 2025. This return not only brings nostalgia, but also a welcome change for train riders and train fans.

The 111 locomotives have been on the tracks since the 1970s and have reliably transported generations of passengers. A total of 227 of these electric locomotives were built between 1974 and 1984, as shown on Wikipedia can be read. Of the 116 in Deutsche Bahn's inventory, 65 are currently parked and some are privately owned. Leisure drivers can enjoy the increased number of excursion trains, which are often run to the north and east on Fridays and Sundays and are also hauled by the 111s.

Travel experiences in Hamm

On September 26, 2025, there were exciting shots at the train station when locomotive 111 191 parked on the platform to take over coach SDZ 21314 from Müller Touristik to Halle (Saale) Hbf. The 101 057 was also in action after it brought the IC 2155 from Cologne to platform 8 before setting off as a pushing locomotive towards Gera Hbf at 11.07 a.m. Another highlight was the arrival of 111 131 with RE 89915 from Düsseldorf in the evening before it went into storage.

But it's not just the return of the 111 that is an issue in Hamm. The station has not forgotten its natural surroundings either; Greenery is currently growing quite high between the tracks. It turns out that with all the technology and the stylish locomotives, nature also has its place, even if sometimes in the shadow of the impressive machines.

An icon of Deutsche Bahn

The 111 series is not just a locomotive, it is a happy reminder of railway history and was designed as the successor to the 110 series. With a top speed of 160 km/h and a service weight of 83 tons, it not only carries passengers, but also the memories of countless journeys. Especially in the 1980s, it was an integral part of S-Bahn traffic and experienced a renaissance through conversion and modernization.

These locomotives are currently very popular not only with Deutsche Bahn, but also with private railways, which have reactivated them with different colors and in different operating conditions. This diversity makes the 111 series a colorful icon of the rail landscape that continues to write new stories.

The return of these relatively old but proven locomotives has a positive effect on regional traffic and makes the hearts of railway fans beat faster. You can see: tradition and modernity can go hand in hand, as the 111 series proves.
