Celebration of the Basic Law: Rock show gets basic rights grooving!
On November 8th it's time to raise the curtain again for the rock show of the Westfälisches Landestheater (WLT) in the Kurhaus. The event with the theme “Fundamental Rights and Respect for Others” celebrates two important events this evening: the 75 years of the German Basic Law and the inviolable human dignity, enshrined in Article 1. This major retrospective is celebrated not only musically, but also visually - with a colorful concept that takes the audience on a journey through time.
Under the direction of Tankred Schleinschock, the WLT ensemble will perform with outstanding actors such as Peti van der Velde and Patrick Sühl. To accompany the whole thing, the Lippe Saiten Orchestra provides instrumental support. The selection of music includes classics from Nina Simone to Udo Lindenberg and expresses not only memories, but also utopias and hopes for a fairer society. The aim is to raise awareness of fundamental rights and promote empathy and kindness.
Music and fundamental rights
However, the celebrations surrounding the Basic Law are not just limited to this one event. As part of the anniversary, the State Music Council of North Rhine-Westphalia has launched an exciting competition: the “Sounding Basic Rights” song contest. Musicians were invited to creatively set parts of the Basic Law to music and submit them, and the result was an inspiring variety of contributions from all musical genres. Prof. Dr. Christine Siegert, President of the State Music Council, particularly emphasized the responsibility for basic democratic rights and invited everyone to engage creatively with this topic. The question was raised: “What do fundamental rights sound like?”
At the end, five creative minds were honored for their special contributions, including Volker Schiewer, who reflected in bluegrass style on the importance of the Basic Law for democracy, and “Ein Fee,” who humorously took up the eternity clause in a rap. The contest is not only intended to encourage reflection, but also to pass on the values of the Basic Law to the next generation.
Diverse celebrations
In addition to the rock show and the song contest, the Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb) offers a variety of other events to appropriately honor 75 years of the Basic Law. A ceremony entitled “11 Declarations of Love for the Basic Law” will take place in Berlin on May 23, 2024, at which personalities from various areas will express their personal appreciation for the constitution. Initiatives are also recognized there as “ambassadors for democracy and tolerance”.
The bpb is also planning a conference dedicated to current challenges such as the climate crisis and racism, as well as an open-air exhibition with fascinating image montages on the founding history of the Federal Republic of Germany. These measures are part of a comprehensive program that emphasizes the importance and importance of the Basic Law in today's society.
Whether at the WLT rock show or as part of the various bpb events - it is clear everywhere: the Basic Law is a living document that affects us all.
