Hamm is committed to climate protection: This is how the heating transition is pushed forward!
A lot is happening in Hamm in the area of climate protection and the heat transition. The city is committed to significantly reducing climate-damaging CO2 emissions, which account for around 40 percent in the heating sector. Mayor Marc Herter sees climate neutrality as a desirable goal that is closely linked to municipal heat planning. This planning was commissioned in the spring of 2025 and is supported by the Hamburg Institute Presse-Service.de reported.
But what has Hamm already achieved so far? In 2023, the development of a “heat focus concept” will be initiated that will shed light on future heat supply. The experts from the Öko-Zentrum NRW, B.A.U.M., are responsible for this. Consult and the Climate and Energy Efficiency Agency (KEEA). Local heat generation was closely examined over 16 months in order to identify further potential and take concrete measures. The involvement of numerous local actors, such as housing associations, companies and municipal utilities, shows that the city relies on broad support. Hamm.de highlights that a round table called “Heat Transition” has been set up as a steering committee to promote exchange.
Concrete measures initiated
An impressive example of the implementation that has already been implemented is the connection of the Hammer non-profit building company to the district heating network, which was realized in November 2024. Over 800 residential units on Holstenstrasse now benefit from the environmentally friendly heat supply. The annual savings of around 1,700 tonnes of CO2 in these rental buildings are a clear signal that sustainable changes are possible and work.
The heat transition is part of a larger overall plan that aims for a greenhouse gas-neutral future. The Federal Environment Agency emphasizes that the operation of buildings in Germany causes around 30% of CO2 emissions. A climate-friendly heat supply is therefore crucial for achieving national climate goals. Energy-efficient renovations and innovative heating systems, such as heat pumps, form a central part of this strategy. This also means that the digital monitoring and control of heat consumption should be significantly improved.
Supported measures and social responsibility
The challenge of adequately supplying energy-poor households is also receiving considerable attention. The city of Hamm and other municipalities have a responsibility to make heat supply more equitable. Political framework conditions must be adapted so that climate-friendly behavior not only becomes easier, but also creates incentives. A well-thought-out concept is essential in order to achieve the desired greenhouse gas neutrality by 2045.
The implementation of the heat planning is a significant step for Hamm. The city has not only recognized the signs of the times, but is also acting proactively to set the course for a greener future. Citizens are cordially invited to find out about the current state of affairs at www.hamm.de/kommunale-waermeplanung and to actively participate in the growing heating transition.
