House of Sports in Hamm: New center with modern priorities!
In the heart of Hamm, a historic building is being converted into a modern sports center. The Sylverberg House, which has been a listed building since 1992, will serve as a “House of Sports” in the future. Representatives of the city and the city sports association signed a declaration of intent on July 7, 2025 to begin this renovation. The plans for an additional youth guest house were rejected at the same time, and a sale to private hands is ruled out, as wa.de reports.
The listed building, which was originally built as a residential building in 1880, has an eventful history behind it. It formerly served as a guesthouse and youth hostel. A comprehensive renovation is now necessary before the renovation can begin, with planning planned for 2026 and construction work in 2027. The city's city sports association expects significant costs, which could be mitigated somewhat through possible funding, such as the recently approved federal funding for sports infrastructure. According to iaks.sport, it was decided on June 19, 2025 to include sport in the federal government's special funds in order to create additional financial scope for renovations.
New priorities in sports
The new “House of Sports” will not only be a central contact point for sports clubs, but will also provide courses and co-working offers. The city plans to employ around 20 people there, including employees of the sports department and the city sports association. This step is particularly important because many sports facilities in Germany are getting old, and the federal government estimates the need for renovation at over 30 billion euros. These modernizations are intended to help create attractive and sustainable exercise spaces for the population.
Interestingly, a different form of use is currently active in the Sylverberg house: unaccompanied minor refugees are accommodated there, with the tenancy ending on September 30, 2025. This gives the city the opportunity to begin renovation work as soon as the building is vacated.
The decision not to use Haus Sylverberg as a youth guesthouse came after in-depth discussions with the German Youth Hostel Association and an inclusion company. Due to high renovation costs and insufficient bed capacity, running a hostel would not be economically viable. Now it remains to be seen how the planning will progress and what further steps will be taken to implement the vision of the “House of Sports”.
