House of Sports in Hamm: New center with modern priorities!

In the heart of Hamm, a historic building is converted into a modern sports center. The Sylverberg house, which has been a listed building since 1992, will serve as a "house of sport" in the future. Representatives of the city and the city sports association signed a declaration of intent on July 7, 2025 to tackle this renovation. The plans for an additional youth guest house were rejected at the same time, and a sale in private hands is excluded, as [Wa.de reports] (https://www.wa.de/hamm/HAUM-DES-SPORTS-AN- VECHNEDEN-ORT-HAMM-TET-NEUE-93822334.html).

The listed building, which was originally built as a residential building in 1880, has already had an eventful history. It used to serve as a pension and youth guest house. A comprehensive renovation is now necessary before the conversion can start, whereby the year 2026 is intended for the planning and in 2027 for the construction work. The municipal city sports association expects considerable costs, which could be mitigated somewhat through possible subsidies, such as the recently decided federal funds for the sports infrastructure. According to [iaks.sport] (https://deutschland.iaks.sport/de/news/sport-foerderfaehig-im-son--im-verswäller-step-fuer the), it was decided on June 19, 2025 to add the special fund of the federal government in order to create additional financial scope for renovations.

New priorities in sports

The new “House of Sports” will not only be a central point of contact for sports clubs, but will also provide courses and co-working offers. The city plans to employ around 20 people there, including employees of the sports office and the city sports association. This step is particularly important because many sports facilities are getting on in years in Germany, and the federal government estimates the need for renovation at over 30 billion euros. These modernizations are intended to help create attractive and sustainable exercise areas for the population.

Interestingly, another form of use is currently active in the Sylverberg house: unaccompanied minor refugees are housed there, with the tenancy ending on September 30, 2025. This gives the city the opportunity to start the renovation work promptly as soon as the building has been released.

The decision not to use the Sylverberg house as a youth guest house was made after detailed talks with the German Youth Hostors and an inclusion company. Due to high renovation costs and inadequate bed capacity, a hostel operation would not be economically portable. Now it remains to be seen how the planning progresses and what other steps are taken to implement the vision of the "House of Sports".
