Young eagle from Hamm: Medical student awakens the flying of a new generation!
On August 11, 2025, young Bastian Aschoff from Hamm will bring a breath of fresh air to gliding. The aspiring aviation enthusiast recently took on the position of “Head of Junge Adler” in the “Quax” club. “I want to increase the visibility of our club among young people and pass on the joy of flying,” explains the 12th semester medical student, who joined the club after taking part in the popular hangar days and being inspired there by his flight instructor Peter Sparding, president of “Quax”.
“Quax” was founded in February 2006 at the Hamm-Lippewiesen airfield and now has around 700 members, including 100 active pilots. With this impressive number of members, the association pursues the goal of keeping historically valuable aircraft airworthy and promoting access to vintage aviation. The members work on a voluntary basis to ensure the preservation of the club's own fleet of 18 vintage aircraft, 100% of every donation goes towards the care of these treasures.
A tailored plan for youth
Bastian has big plans. He would like to increase young people's participation in events, such as the German Navigation Flight, which he would like to accompany with an active social media presence on Instagram. “It’s not only fun to attend the events, but also to promote exchange within the community,” he says. Bastian also has an innovative idea: young members should use their driving licenses to transport aircraft parts. This measure is intended not only to increase efficiency, but also to increase the commitment of young people in the club.
In his new role, Bastian is striving for better structuring and faster qualification for new members. “We have to make sure that the next generations are well prepared and can take on the love of aviation,” said the young pilot.
A look into the future
However, the “Quax” club is not the only place in the region dedicated to aviation. The Association of Friends of Historic Aircraft e.V. (VFL) is also committed to the preservation and return to service of the CASA 352/Ju 52, known as HB-HOY. Founded by employees of Düsseldorf Airport, the VFL has over 70 members and also runs a permanent exhibition about Hugo Junkers at Mönchengladbach Airport. The Ju 52, an aviation classic, is known for its reliability and versatility and is a real gem in aviation history.
With a great passion for historic aircraft, both “Quax” and the VFL stand for the preservation of aviation heritage and the passing on of aviation knowledge to future generations. At a time when modern aviation technology is advancing rapidly, these clubs have a good knack for tradition and innovation.
If you would like to become part of this exciting community, “Quax” offers the opportunity to become a member. Joining is easy and offers the advantage of attending various events for free and flying with experienced pilots in vintage cars.
Who knows, perhaps a new generation of aviation enthusiasts will soon be taking to the skies, thanks to the work of Bastian and his colleagues in the “Quax” association!
