After mother's death: son donates 6,100 euros for sick children

A particularly touching sign of solidarity and remembrance recently came from Hamm. Baris Subasi, who initiated a fundraising campaign after the death of his mother Semaye Subasi, has shown how important it is to be there for others, even in difficult times. Semaye Subasi died on May 29, 2024 at the age of 52 as a result of cancer. A year after her death, Baris gave his grief meaning by supporting the outpatient children's and youth hospice service in Hamm (AKHD) on its first anniversary, raising an impressive sum of 6,323.55 euros. After deducting the PayPal fees, 6,100 euros remained for the children and their families affected by serious illnesses.

The campaign attracted 188 donors in just 13 days, who came together for a good cause. “It was impressive to see how many people took part,” emphasized Subasi. Surprisingly, he initially expected a lower amount, but the enormous commitment of the supporters far exceeded his expectations. On June 12, 2024, he ceremoniously handed over the check to Merle Menke, the coordination specialist at AKHD Hamm, on behalf of his deceased mother.

A lasting legacy

“I want the money to stay in my hometown of Hamm and go to those who need it most,” explained Subasi. This commitment is not only a tribute to his mother, but also an example of how personal losses can be transformed into positive actions. The AKHD Hamm itself was impressed by the high amount of donations and described the campaign as extraordinary.

The focus of this fundraiser is to support children with life-limiting illnesses. In Germany, children with cancer are particularly affected by the challenges that come with their illness. According to the German Childhood Cancer Registry, these diseases are recorded and evaluated nationwide, which underlines the importance of initiatives like that of Baris Subasi.

A tragic reality

The situation for children with cancer is dramatic. Thousands of children in Germany fall ill every year, and many of these illnesses are life-shortening. The Center for Cancer Registry Data (ZfKD) at the Robert Koch Institute is tasked with collecting and evaluating relevant data in order to better understand the epidemiology and prognosis of cancer. These data are crucial to advance developments in the field of cancer research and therapy.

Overall, Baris Subasi's action shows that despite the sad circumstances, solidarity and willingness to help are strong in society. A good knack for providing the right support can make a lasting difference in the lives of others.
