Apply now: Mariechen Marathon in Heinsberg!
In Cologne, anticipation is raging for one of the most colorful events of the year: the “Jennys Volksbank Heinsberg Mariechen Marathon”. This unique event, aimed at carnival dancers, is just around the corner and the application phase ends on November 2nd. Like that Heinsberg Magazine reports, this is not only a stage for talented dancers, but also an excellent opportunity to express the carnival in all its glory.
The event was created by Jenny Peggen, a former dance mariechen and trainer. In the midst of the corona pandemic, she felt the need to offer the Mariechen she trained a platform. The success speaks for itself: over 300,000 views for the videos of the previous marathons show how much this event has touched the heart of the carnival.
An event full of energy and cohesion
The motto of this year's marathon, “Mer sin 1”, inspired by the Cologne band Kasalla, sums up the feeling of community. Basti Campmann from Kasalla emphasizes the unifying power of carnival, an element that is particularly important in these times. The band will perform as a top act for the anniversary and will certainly create an unforgettable atmosphere.
Participation in the marathon is open to all carnival dancers thanks to a “wildcard” from Volksbank. Applications close on November 2nd and the jury will then select participants. The results will be announced on November 11th, a day already firmly established in the carnival calendar.
Carnival in Germany – a colorful tradition
But what makes Carnival in Germany so special? Like that Alumni Portal Germany As explained, Carnival or “Fastelovend” is a celebration that goes far beyond dancing. Costumes, songs and strange rituals characterize the festivities and vary from region to region. The fifth season became particularly established in Protestant areas, while Catholic regions have had celebrations for centuries.
The roots of Carnival go back to ancient times, with festivals honoring Dionysus and Saturn. Excessive eating and drinking as well as mocking those in power are still central elements today, while devils and witches play an important role in the Swabian-Alemannic carnival. Parades, such as the impressive Rose Monday procession in Cologne, attract thousands of participants and spectators every year and are the highlight of the carnival season.
Preparations for the carnival are in full swing, and the “Jennys Volksbank Heinsberg Mariechen Marathon” will further fuel anticipation for the festivities. If you haven't applied yet, you should do so quickly because the deadline is approaching!
