Hottest day of the year: NRW is threatened with tropical heat and thunderstorms!
A heated time is approaching Cologne. On Sunday, June 30, 2025, the German Weather Service (DWD) will sound the alarm because temperatures could rise to record-breaking levels in the coming days. Values of over 30 degrees are expected on Sunday, with a possible increase to up to 35 degrees on Monday. On Tuesday the thermometer could even break the 37 degree mark, and on Wednesday the hottest day of the year is forecast with an incredible 39 degrees. Particularly in densely built-up urban areas such as Cologne, severe heat pollution is expected, which poses a challenge for many. The reports on this NW, that warm thunderstorms can occur from the evening hours on Wednesday, but these will only bring little cooling.
Like that WDR explained, the nights will be tropical from Tuesday onwards; temperatures will not fall below 20 degrees. To counteract the health risks that such extreme heat can bring, meteorologists recommend drinking enough fluids and staying in cool indoor areas if possible. Older people, pregnant women, children and people with chronic illnesses are particularly at risk, as the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) emphasizes. The heat-related health problems can have serious consequences and preventive measures for heat protection are urgently needed.
Caution is the order of the day
In recent years, climate change has caused an increase in hot days in Germany. These developments show that residents should not only react in the short term, but also pay attention to sustainable heat protection measures. The RKI emphasizes that good monitoring and reliable information are crucial in order to keep heat flows and their effects on the population under control.
In addition, meteorologists expect that the tendency for showers and thunderstorms will increase from Wednesday. This could lead to the hoped-for cooling, even if the Atlantic air does not immediately make the summer heat disappear. The chances of rain showers are likely to increase into the coming week, which could at least bring the long-awaited rain, according to the DWD.
The heat wave in comparison
In the past, extreme temperatures in North Rhine-Westphalia have repeatedly caused excitement. The record values from 2019, when 41.2 degrees were measured in Duisburg-Baerl and 41.1 degrees in Cologne, remain unmatched. At least for now, because the forecasts make it clear that the weather will remain unpredictable in the coming weeks.
In summary, it is now important to prepare for the coming heat wave and take appropriate precautions. The appeal is to stay hydrated, avoid the blazing sun and take advantage of the cool evening hours to perhaps go for a walk. Because even in the heat it's important not to let yourself get down!
