Fraudsters in Menden: False fundraising escalates in the supermarket!
Yesterday, October 30, 2025, two men from Herne caused a stir in a supermarket on Holzener Straße in Menden. Under the pretext of collecting donations, the two, 32 and 34 years old, got into an argument with the employees there. How Hello Herne Reportedly, the men refused to leave the store and swore loudly when told to do so by employees.
The situation escalated at the checkout when one of the men suddenly sprinted out of the store with signature lists and money. However, the employees were able to restrain the other two men. A scuffle ensued and those detained claimed they were being held “inexplicably”. They filed assault charges against the employees, saying they were assaulted by the employees and a T-shirt was torn.
Special investigations and further allegations
The police have now launched extensive investigations against the men from Herne, alleging fraud and trespassing. What's interesting is that the situation isn't just about the fundraising campaign. A woman from Menden also filed a complaint because she had transferred money for a hydraulic pump that she never received. Another Menden resident also complained that he had paid for goods on an online classifieds portal but received nothing. This shows once again the dangers associated with online shopping.
News.de reports that the risks for buyers are often considerable in online transactions with used or new items. 24 percent of Germans have already suffered online fraud, and the financial damage can be significant. Fake shops and non-cash payment methods in particular attract numerous fraudsters who often appear under false pretenses. The police therefore advise you to be careful when buying online and to choose safe payment methods.
Prevention measures and advice
To protect yourself from fraud, the police advise not to send copies of ID to confirm purchases and to only use the so-called “friends and family functions” on payment service providers for trustworthy people. The dangers of online fraud are real, and as a Schufa survey shows, the financial damage is in many cases less than 1,000 euros. But higher losses cannot be ruled out, as identity theft and the loss of sensitive data remain major problems.
Overall, it should be noted that healthy skepticism and vigilance are required in both real and virtual trading in order to stay on the safe side in Menden and elsewhere.
