Herne plans station offensive: funding secured for modernization!
The city of Herne is in the starting blocks to provide the train stations in Wanne-Eickel and Herne with new impulses. As part of the “Arrive more beautifully in NRW” funding program, which was launched by the Ministry for Homeland, Municipal Affairs, Construction and Digitalization (MHKBD), the train stations and their surroundings are to be comprehensively upgraded. Herne.de reports that the city is currently preparing a basic funding application in order to secure the necessary financial resources for the planned measures.
The upgrade goes hand in hand with detailed planning. An important part of the application are the so-called integrated urban development concepts (ISEK), which must be formally approved by the city council. The city's political committees are also part of the process and will consider the proposals.
Comprehensive planning for a better train station
As part of a presentation, Mayor Dr. Frank Dudda and city councilor Stefan Thabe presented the details of the plans. The goal is not only to acquire funding, but also to significantly improve the station experience for travelers. The planned measures include, among other things, better linking of the various modes of transport.
A new cycle and pedestrian path, a lighting concept for the station underpass and a modern cycle parking facility at Herne station are also on the agenda. Another highlight is the illumination of the bunker at Wanne-Eickel main station and the installation of light signposts to the “Urban Arts District Wanne”.
The path to realization
The city is optimistic about the allocation of funds and plans to submit the application by the end of September 2025. The concrete design preparations should be carried out after the funding provider's decision has been made. In the long term, an implementation period over several years is planned in coordination with Deutsche Bahn.
Urban development funding in North Rhine-Westphalia was restructured in 2020. Innovative programs are available to reduce urban development problems and improve the functionality of cities. FRG NRW highlights that these approaches offer future-oriented solutions for many communities and that funding can be targeted in various areas, including the Living Centers program as well as the Social Cohesion and Growth and Sustainable Renewal programs.
Applications for urban development funding must be submitted for the coming year by the end of September 2025. This regulation gives municipalities, like Herne, the opportunity to prepare strategically for the future and to rely on financial support. NRW Urban points out that early advice is of great importance for municipalities in order to maximize the chances of receiving funding.
