63-year-old seriously injured in e-bike accident in Schmallenberg!

Another accident with an e-bike caused a stir in Schmallenberg-Rimberg on Saturday, July 5, 2025. Shortly after 11:25 a.m., a 63-year-old woman from Schmallenberg lost control of her electrically assisted bicycle on an unpaved, sloping forest path and fell heavily. Details of the incident were published by the Hochsauerlandkreis district police authority.

Despite her accident, the woman was able to reach her husband independently and inform the rescue control center. An ambulance was immediately sent and took her to a nearby hospital. Fortunately, according to the police, life-threatening events were ruled out, but she still suffered serious injuries that required medical treatment.

Common risks when riding a Pedelec

Accidents involving e-bikes, or as they are called in Germany, Pedelecs, have been steadily increasing in recent years. The number of accidents involving these bicycles increased tenfold within a decade. In 2014, only 3.4% of households in Germany had a Pedelec; in 2022 this value was already 15.5% ( Pharmacy look around ). However, the advantages of Pedelecs, including support when pedaling up to 25 km/h and the associated ability to cover longer distances, also involve risks.

What is particularly noteworthy is that the cycling infrastructure has not been able to keep up with the increase in cycling traffic in recent years. Many Pedelec riders are older, which, combined with the heavier bikes and the frequent rides on adventurous routes such as forest paths, leads to an increased risk of falls. The accident statistics show that almost every third person who has had a Pedelec accident in recent years has been under the age of 45 ( Pharmacy look around ).

To minimize the risk, it is recommended to take safety measures such as providing driver safety training for new and older drivers. It is also recommended that you pay attention to models with a low entry when purchasing and that you always wear a helmet to avoid head injuries.

The incident in Schmallenberg shows how important it is to be aware of the dangers of riding a Pedelec. The combination of steep, unpaved paths and increasing user numbers requires greater attention to safety and infrastructure. Stay safe on the trails!
