African swine fever: infected zone defined in Kirchhundem!

A new case of African swine fever (ASF) is causing excitement in North Rhine-Westphalia. A wild boar with ASF was found in Kirchhundem, which has serious implications for the surrounding districts. The districts of Olpe, Siegen-Wittgenstein and the Hochsauerland district immediately issued a general decree to define an infected zone. This zone extends over a radius of around 15 kilometers around the site and affects parts of the three circles. Pigs.net reports that the situation is being taken seriously as there is currently one confirmed case and four other suspected wild boar cases near the site.

The first confirmations are alarming: the first wild boar was found positive on June 10th. Intensive searches led to the discovery of four more dead animals, although their suspicion of ASF still needs to be verified. Fortunately, there were no further discoveries in the last two days. However, this means immediate restrictions for the population and farmers in the region.

Special requirements and measures

Strict regulations apply to hunters, pig farmers and farmers in the infected zone: hunting is prohibited and free-range farming and confinement of wild boars are no longer permitted. The movement of pigs from the infected zone is also prohibited or must be coordinated with the veterinary office in advance. Fortunately, there are no restrictions on the movement and slaughter of pigs outside this area. The situation requires clear communication and education, which is why the Westphalian Agricultural Association (WLV) has invited people to a digital information event to inform farmers about current developments and measures.

According to experts, the situation can be viewed as dynamic in terms of further developments. The Pig Farmers' Interest Group (ISN) also emphasizes the importance of biosecurity measures. These are essential to prevent the spread of the dangerous animal disease and to protect stocks.

Current information situation

The Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) has comprehensive data available for anyone who would like to find out about the current status and spread of African swine fever. Loud FLI The maps showing the reported cases in both Germany and Eastern Europe are updated weekly. The map of Europe shows cases registered since January 1st, 2021, with red dots for domestic pig farms and blue dots for wild boars. It is particularly important that the maps that will be published from 2019 no longer contain any restriction zones, so the current information situation is of utmost importance for farmers.

The situation remains tense for the region and the farmers affected, but the authorities are trying to make the best possible out of this situation with clear measures and an intensive information strategy. After all, a good hand in animal husbandry and care can be found in every corner of North Rhine-Westphalia.
