Geldern pedals: 224,451 kilometers of city cycling!

The city of Geldern can proudly look back on its achievements in this year's city cycling campaign under the motto "Be smart - get on the bike". From May 26th to June 15th, 1,211 active cyclists in 72 teams pedaled and collected an impressive 224,451 kilometers Lower Rhine News reported. Geldern thus achieved second place in the district, just behind the leader Kleve, which covered 239,342 kilometers.

This is a significant increase compared to the previous year, as 194,728 kilometers were cycled in 2024. The 224,451 kilometers that were accumulated this year resulted in savings of around 37 tons of CO2. This corresponds to more than 2,500 car journeys from Geldern to Cologne - a clear indication of the positive effects of cycling, which not only contribute to health but also benefit the climate.

Team ratings and awards

The official award ceremony took place as part of the popular “Geldern Karibisch” event, where the winning teams were awarded city vouchers. In the team ranking, the “RSG Gelderland” team took first place with 36 participants and an impressive 21,293 kilometers. The “Fairtrade Fietsers” followed in second place with 9,069 kilometers, followed by the “St. Maria Magdalena” team, which covered 8,021 kilometers.

The special “School Cycling” competition was particularly exciting, in which the Friedrich-Spee-Gymnasium took first place with 13,409 kilometers (115 cyclists). They are followed by the Liebfrauen-Realschule with 12,618 kilometers (49 cyclists) and the Geldern comprehensive school with 7,753 kilometers (148 cyclists). On the kindergarten side, Kita St. Georg came out on top with 8,063 kilometers (37 participants).

Individual cyclists and actions

The “RSG Gelderland” team received the award for the most average kilometers ridden with 591 km per cyclist. Particularly noteworthy were the individual cyclists who gave free rein to their enthusiasm for cycling: Sandra Langanke from the “Schaffrath” team won the women’s race with 1,193 kilometers, while Lars Friedrich from the “RSG Gelderland” team took top place among the men with 1,815 kilometers.

The head of the environment, climate and mobility department, Janine Segref, moderated the award ceremony and made it clear that the response to the campaign was consistently positive. Such initiatives are intended not only to promote the joy of cycling, but also to establish environmentally conscious thinking in the community.

CITY CYCLING, which was launched by Climate Alliance, aims to motivate people to experience the benefits of cycling in everyday life.
