Klever city council approves new drug shelter – central criticism is growing!
The city of Kleve has taken a decisive step to improve the situation of drug addicts. How Antenna Lower Rhine reports, the city council has decided on a new shelter for drug addicts, which will be built on the outskirts of the city between Klever Ring and the B57 on Pappelweg. Completion is scheduled for the end of the 2025 summer holidays. The aim is not only to create a place of refuge for those affected, but also to directly address the problem of drug use in the city.
But not everyone is enthusiastic about this solution. Critics have raised concerns about the location of the shelter, as it is at least a kilometer away from the station and there is a risk that it will be underused in these circumstances. The situation for this group of people has become even more tense, especially after the fire and the closure of a container at the train station, which previously served as a contact point for drug addicts. Drug users have also spread out around Spyckstrasse, which has led to complaints from residents about syringes lying around and other problems.
Urgent need for action
The development is particularly exciting because the city of Kleve decided in July 2024 not to set up a drug consumption room. This decision was rejected at the time due to a request from the Offen Klever (OK), but the problem still exists. After a new application was submitted to set up a drug consumption room in the northern district, Udo Weinrich, parliamentary group leader of the OK, sees an urgent need for action. He emphasizes that there is no silver bullet in this complex matter and that rejecting the drug consumption room and a drug container does not represent a solution to the challenges in Kleve.
The planned drug consumption room should not only be a place of retreat, but also function as a health, survival and exit aid for drug addicts. Given the ongoing problems, it is of great importance that the city administration now carefully works out the details of the design of this shelter. The community is excited to see how the situation will develop and whether the new shelter can actually have the desired effect.
In the ongoing discussions about drug policy and consumption spaces, many agree: people are at the center of considerations. Those interested can find more information on the subject of drug policy at soztheo.de.
