Large ice rinks for Krefeld: laying of the foundation stone and future plans revealed!
A significant step for ice sports was heralded in Krefeld on July 2, 2025: the laying of the foundation stone for a new ice rink project took place in a ceremonial setting. Mayor Frank Meyer emphasized the importance of these facilities for the city's sports culture. The new building complex is being built on Westparkstrasse, directly opposite the Yayla Arena, and will be designed as a modern triple sports hall.
The planned construction project brings with it several innovations. One of the ice rinks will have a grandstand with space for more than 1,000 spectators. In addition, various facilities such as a senior center, a daycare center, a medical center and living quarters are being built on the site of the old Rheinlandhalle, which was demolished due to high renovation costs. Completion of the ice rinks is scheduled for 2027, with the total construction costs being around 90 million euros.
A showcase project for the region
The ice rink project, which the city of Krefeld is planning in cooperation with the project company, will not only be available to the Krefeld Ice Hockey Club (KEV), but also to schools. The concept also includes the possibility of making the ice available all year round, which could create additional usage opportunities. In addition, a parking garage and an exercise park will be built in the outdoor area of the complex.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Rheinlandhalle took place on May 24, 2025 and marked the start of construction work. In addition to Mayor Meyer, the head of the construction and planning department Marcus Beyer, managing director of the project company Thomas Rodemeier and the former German national ice hockey player Christian Ehrhoff were present. The entire implementation of the project is proceeding quickly: there were less than twelve months between the council decision in June 2023 and the groundbreaking ceremony.
The innovative approach, in which the city pays the investor over three decades and still retains ownership of the property, shows that those responsible have a good knack for future-oriented solutions. The architecture and planning of the project comes from Hans Jakel, who is looking forward to creating a modern infrastructure for ice sports.
All of these steps are part of a comprehensive plan that aims to improve Krefeld as a sports location and at the same time offer the city's citizens a new quality of life. The ice rinks will not only attract sports enthusiasts, but will also serve as a place for meetings and leisure activities. This will be a real plus for the entire region!
