Krefeld takes off: Industrial roadmap 2025 for a strong future!

Something is happening in Krefeld – all about industry. On July 12, 2025, the “Industrial Roadmap 2025 ff.” launched to strengthen the location as an industrial hotspot. Mayor Frank Meyer sees this initiative as a “good start” and a “strong commitment” to the city’s industrial future. The event took place in the innovative Future Work Lab at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences, where Eckart Preen, Head of the Economics Department, moderated and emphasized the key role of industry for investments and jobs.

The industrial roadmap is the product of the “Krefeld Industrial Initiative”, supported by the IHK Mittlerer Niederrhein and the Krefeld-Uerdingen Industrial Association. The focus here is on five guiding principles that serve as a foundation for future developments:

  • Unterstützung industriegeprägter Neuansiedlungen.
  • Schnellere Genehmigungsverfahren.
  • Bildungsoffensive zur Förderung von Transformationskompetenz.
  • Bessere Vernetzung mit Politik und Verwaltung.
  • Gesellschaftliche Verankerung der Industrie in Krefeld.

Focus on the essentials

A central concern of the initiative is to improve important transport connections, especially the Uerdingen Rhine Bridge. The digital infrastructure should also be expanded to make Krefeld fit for the future. The city is aware that successful collaborations with universities, chambers and the employment agency are crucial in order to train the necessary skilled workers.

Given the challenges facing German industry – from climate neutrality to digitalization to resource efficiency – the need for training programs and interdisciplinary collaboration is becoming increasingly clear. According to the online portal for industrial transformation, Germany is facing fundamental change, and in order to become climate neutral by 2045, technological innovations and new processes are essential.

The opportunities that this change offers should be actively used to promote regional value creation and sustainable growth. Here too, IHK general manager Jürgen Steinmetz emphasizes the importance of an industrial spirit in the city administration and city council in order to make this transformation successful.

A togetherness for the future

It is important that not only companies but also society as a whole are involved in this process. The industrial roadmap is therefore seen as a starting point for deeper industrial policy cooperation. Dr. Georg Geier from Siempelkamp Giesserei GmbH calls for an energy mix that reduces bureaucracy and achieves the RAL quality mark “SME-friendly municipality”.

In summary, Krefeld has a clear vision and is actively committed to its role as an industrial city. The route via the “Industrial Roadmap 2025 ff.” is a promising one. Ultimately, the industry can not only create jobs, but also make a decisive contribution to the region's prosperity, as Detlef Rennings, chairman of the general works council at Currenta, correctly states. In all of this there is only one thing that remains clear: the future is industrial, and Krefeld has set the course!
