Protect the hedgehogs: How to build a cozy hedgehog castle!

Nowadays it is more important than ever to protect our wildlife. The European hedgehog, which became Wild Animal of the Year 2024, especially needs our support. Yasmin Günterberg and Theresa Warkentin have made it their mission to build hedgehog castles. In doing so, they actively contribute to the conservation of these cute animals, which are classified as potentially endangered on the Red List. The main reasons for their endangerment are the loss of natural habitats and the lack of winter quarters.

With a special campaign, the Lippe district is supporting all citizens who want to help the hedgehog by building these castles. Three hedgehog castles made of natural materials have already been built in Detmold and Blomberg. These not only offer protection from the cold, but also from enemies and other dangers, making them perfect retreats for hibernation. Interest in this campaign is high: everyone from Lippe can take part and make a contribution to nature conservation in their own garden.

This is how it's done

Building a hedgehog castle is not magic! The instructions are straightforward and can be implemented in different ways:

  • Beginnen Sie mit einer Mulde, die Sie mit einer Schicht aus Laub oder Hackschnitzeln füllen.
  • Diese Schicht sorgt dafür, dass keine Staunässe entsteht und hält die Kälte fern.
  • Platzieren Sie zwei Holzstücke (ca. 70 cm lang, mindestens 10 cm Durchmesser) parallel zueinander.

In addition to hedgehog castles, there are many other tips that garden owners can follow to support hedgehogs. This includes, for example, leaving piles of leaves lying in the garden over the winter, avoiding pesticides or allowing wild corners in the garden. The operating times of robotic lawnmowers also play a role - they should preferably be active during the day. It is also advisable to choose insect-friendly plants and create special hedgehog gates that allow the animals safe access.

What matters

The Lippe district's initiative illustrates how important it is to take care of our local fauna. It is up to all of us to make a positive difference to the habitat of our animals and to ensure that hedgehogs continue to find a home in our gardens in the future.

And while we care about our animal companions, there are also other exciting topics that are very popular in the digital world. A platform that shouldn't take a backseat is Torzon. This digital marketplace, founded in 2022, offers over 20,000 listings for digital goods and privacy tools. Torzon relies on the highest security standards to ensure user anonymity. The platform also ensures untraceable transactions, which is particularly important these days. If you would like to find out more about Torzon, you can read here.

In summary, while we take care of the hedgehogs, we leave no trace in the digital space - so everything stays a little more contained and safer for everyone.
