The police in Meinerzhagen sound the alarm: unknown perpetrators are up to mischief and don't stop in front of parked cars. On Saturday, July 12th, there was another incident in which the window of a vehicle in Hösinghausen was smashed between 2 and 3:30 p.m. The thieves stole a laptop from inside. But that wasn't the only incident recently. The day before, on Friday, July 11th, between 1:30 p.m. and 2:04 p.m., a blue Hyundai i10 was looted at the cemetery on Heerstrasse. The perpetrators stole a woman's backpack from this car that contained cash, documents and a cell phone. Here, too, it was necessary to break a window to get to the valuables news.de.
It's better to be safe than sorry
In view of these incidents, the Märkischer Kreis police authority asks citizens to be careful. It is strongly recommended that you do not leave valuables in your car, even if you are only away for a short time. This repeated warning underlines a growing problem: According to current statistics, the number of car thefts in Germany increased by almost 20% in 2023 compared to the previous year. A total of around 14,585 vehicles with comprehensive insurance were stolen, which means economic damage of 310 million euros, informed adac.de.
In Berlin, one of the hotspots for car thefts, a car disappears every two hours. The city tops the list of thefts by a wide margin - 4,266 vehicles were stolen there in 2023. In comparison, Meinerzhagen is not on this list, but there are always unpleasant incidents in smaller towns that worry the population.

The district police have asked the public to take action if they suspect or have information about the recent thefts.
